International Experience-Clarksville Host Family Community Group This group is about educating local residents of Clarksville Tennessee on the International Experience Program. Amazing, right?

International Experience is a Department of Safety-approved international exchange placement organization. What would it be like to welcome a student from a different country with different cultures, traditions, and perspectives into your home? This organization might be a fit for you if you desire to expand your outreach, give back, or want to try something you've never had the courage to do. Thi

s is for a person or family who may be interested in giving of their time and resources to accept an international teenager into their home and provide them the opportunity to experience our beautiful city and state. The program truly allows for the student and hosting family to gain a family abroad. An opportunity of a lifetime! This program is perfect for all families: single persons, single-parent households, two-parent households, big families, empty-nesters, individuals who've chosen not to have children, and/or retirees. N-Nourish

Building your student's confidence is so important.

Finding out their favorite foods. For instance, most German students eat a lot of bread. The kind of bread we get at the store is known as toast bread. Not bread bread - they are referring to a much denser type of bread than we have at most grocery stores. You may consider getting a loaf of speciality bread: ciabatta or baguette at the grocery store and let them try that. It won't be the same but it might be interesting to get their point of view. German students also really like meats, cheeses, jams, etc. for breakfast. My Spanish student loved cereal and waffles for any and every meal. When in Germany I ate raw peppers and cucumbers for breakfast which was new and interesting to me. So get creative and find ways that you can nourish your student.

Encouraging them when they mess up a word or phrase. At some point in the exchange - it will become funny. Students are doing the best they can so we always want to be there to offer kind responses when they don't communicate exactly what they intended!

ISO HOST FAMILIES for the 2025-2026 school year

Meet Tim. Tim thinks he is pretty funny. Tim loves his dog, sports, and family time. He wants to come live the American high school experience. He wants to become part of your team. He lives in Germany now but would love to make Tennessee or Kentucky his home.

Q: Do I have to have children of my own to host?
A: Nope.

Q: Do I have to have a spouse/partner?
A: Nope.

Q: Do I need to have a huge home?
A: Nope. The student will need a space where they can have privacy. The requirement of the bedroom for each student is a bed on a frame, window, door to the room, and closet space.

Q: Does my student have to have a room to themselves?
A: Not necessarily. If the student shares a room, it has to be gender and age appropriate. Student does have to have their own bed on a frame.

Q: Do I have to pay for their travel?
A: Nope. All students come with their own insurance, spending money, and sports/activity fund.

Q: What is a host family responsible for?
A: We ask that the host family cook enough for their student to eat the meals they are eating and provide snack food and meals on the weekends. We also ask our families to provide the student with a safe and stable home environment and reasonable transportation to and from activities.

Q: How do I apply?
A: Go to ie-usa.org and fill out your application. We ask that you be 25 years and older, be able to pass a background check, provide a few references who are not family, and be willing to share a little about your family, community, and lifestyle so we can make the best match possible.
