Yum yum!

A BHHC volunteer recently captured this close-up encounter between a praying mantis and a bumble bee.

While this is a glimpse of nature in action, it also raises an important question about the pressures facing our native insects. Non-native species, like this mantis, can introduce new challenges for the wildlife that belongs here. When native bees and other insects already face habitat loss, pesticide exposure, and declining sources of food and shelter, additional pressures matter.

That's why protecting and restoring healthy habitat is so important.

At Blue Heron Headwaters Conservancy, we work to conserve diverse natural places where native plants can flourish and native wildlife can find the food, shelter, and habitat they need to survive. We can't control every encounter in nature. But we can protect the places that give native species the best chance to thrive.

Healthy habitats matter. Every species has a place in the story of a healthy ecosystem.

🍂 A little sneak peek at what’s happening in stewardship this October...

Fall is a busy season on the preserves, and we have some great opportunities coming up to get outside and be part of the work.

🌱 October 10 | Holly Lakeview
We’ll be collecting native seed from the demonstration garden and cleaning up trash around the preserve.

🌾 October 14 | Knorr Preserve
Join us for native seed collection. We’ll meet at the office and head over to the preserve together.

🥾 October 24 | Nolta Brennan
We’re creating a new stewardship trail to make future work on the preserve easier and more accessible.

🌿 October 28 | Butterfly Preserve
We’ll be collecting native seed and doing trail work at the preserve in Davisburg.

From gathering the seeds that will help grow future habitat to creating trails that make stewardship possible, there’s a lot happening behind the scenes this time of year.

Healthy water starts with healthy wetlands and headwaters.

We work to protect land within the headwaters of the Clinton, Huron, Shiawassee, and Flint Rivers. Forests, wetlands, and streams on these lands help support clean water, wildlife habitat, and healthy ecosystems downstream.

Protecting these natural areas is one of the ways we can help keep our region's waterways healthy for the future.

Have you heard them yet?

If you've ever heard a Sandhill Crane before you've seen one, you know. That unmistakable rattling call carries a surprisingly long way across a wetland or open field.

Every fall, thousands of Sandhill Cranes pass through Michigan on their southward migration. They stop in wetlands and agricultural fields to feed and rest before continuing their journey.

October is a great time to watch for them. And sometimes, the first sign that they're nearby isn't something you see. It's something you hear. Wetlands and open spaces along their route give migrating cranes places to stop, feed, and rest along the way.

Look up. Listen. You might be closer to migration than you think.
