Amani Women Center

Amani Women Center Amani Women Center (AWC) is a safe haven for refugee women of all cultures who are seeking a space for spiritual, mental, and physical healing.

AMANI WOMEN CENTER (AWC) enriches the lives of refugee families in Georgia and empowers them in their new environment by providing educational and leadership programs, along with a variety of social and civic services. We serve these women and children once their resettlement services benefits end and when they are faced with the challenges of providing for themselves and their families. AWC fills

this important gap by providing 3 unique programs utilizing a holistic approach designed to build and sustain healthy families within the home and the community. Amani is "Swahili" for peace. "Peace" is what every refugee woman (New Americans) and family are seeking when fleeing their war-torn countries and resettling in America.

Our ESL Buddies Potluck at AWC was a wonderful celebration of friendship, culture, and community! 🌎❤️ We enjoyed delicious international cuisine, great conversations, and lots of laughter. Thankful for everyone who shared a dish and made the evening so special. Together, we are building a more welcoming, connected, and empowered community—one friendship at a time. ✨

About AWC’s ESL BUDDY PROGRAM:
The ESL Buddy Program at Amani Women Center is a supportive, relationship-based English language learning initiative that pairs refugee women and survivors with volunteers to practice conversational English in a safe and welcoming environment. The program helps participants build confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and everyday communication skills while fostering meaningful social connections and reducing isolation. Through one-on-one interactions, participants strengthen their ability to navigate daily life, access services, communicate with employers, and pursue economic opportunities. The ESL Buddy Program complements AWC’s workforce development and sewing programs by helping women gain the language skills needed for greater independence, self-sufficiency, and community integration.

“Community-Driven Strategies to Address Health Impacts of Female Ge***al Cutting”

I am grateful for the opportunity to present at the PEGASUS 2026 Conference and share the work of the Amani Women Center Save Our Sisters (S.O.S.) Initiative.

Developed through CDC-funded research, in partnership with NORC at the University of Chicago, as part of the Women’s Health Needs Study (WHNS), the S.O.S. Initiative helps women living with the long-term health impacts of Female Ge***al Cutting (FGC) access critical medical care, including restorative surgery.

We are proud to recognize our January, February, and March Students of the Month in our “Workforce Development Sewing for Self-Sufficiency Program.” Each student was honored with a certificate and a monetary gift in recognition of their excellence and exceptional dedication, growth, and commitment in advancing their sewing skills. Through consistent participation and eagerness to learn, they are building valuable skills that contribute to greater confidence, independence, and future opportunities.

Congratulations to all of our Students of the Month — your determination and achievements make us incredibly proud!

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta and the anonymous donor whose generosity made this possible. Their support demonstrates the power of partnership and the impact that compassionate community investment can have on the lives of refugee families.

Transportation is one of the greatest obstacles to accessing opportunity. Reliable transportation impacts nearly every aspect of daily life. At Amani Women Center, we work to empower refugee women and survivors through workforce development, assisting with social services and pathways toward long-term self-sufficiency.

This new 15-passenger van is already making a meaningful difference. The vehicle allows us to safely transport participants to our programs and community events.

We are thankful for everyone who walks alongside us in this mission. Together, we are driving change, one journey, one family, and one opportunity at a time.
