💗 Understanding Postpartum OCD: What Every Mom Should Know

Postpartum Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is one of the least talked-about maternal mental health conditions — yet it affects many new moms. 💭

Mothers with postpartum OCD often experience unwanted, intrusive thoughts that feel scary or distressing — such as fears of harm coming to their baby, or worries about contamination, safety, or control. These thoughts are ego-dystonic, meaning they go against what the mother truly believes or wants.

💡 Here’s what’s important to know:
• Having these thoughts does not mean you’re a danger to your baby.
• These thoughts are symptoms, not reflections of who you are.
• Postpartum OCD is treatable with therapy, support, and sometimes medication.

If you or someone you love is struggling with upsetting thoughts after giving birth, please remember — you are not alone, and help is available. 💕

🌿 Every Birth Story Matters. Every Mama Deserves Support. 🌿

According to the Maternal Mental Health Leadership Alliance (MMHLA):
➡️ 1 in 3 birthing people report feeling traumatized by their childbirth experience.
➡️ 1 in 5 report experiencing mistreatment during pregnancy or childbirth.

These numbers remind us that birth should be empowering—not traumatic. Access to compassionate, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive mental health care is essential for every mama.

We’re grateful for the incredible organizations leading the charge to expand awareness, access, and healing support for mamas and families. Here are a few national and local organizations making an impact:

✨ Black Mamas Matter Alliance – www.blackmamasmatter.org

✨ Perinatal Mental Health Alliance for People of Color – www.pmhapoc.org

✨ Shades of Blue Project – www.shadesofblueproject.org

✨ Postpartum Support International – www.postpartum.net

We need you help to keep Clarksdale Baby University running and supporting families in Clarksdale and the surrounding area.

Since October 2014, when Spring opened Clarksdale Baby University under the leadership of Dr. Franziska Reff, we have worked to keep Baby University alive as an important program that our community needs and deserves.

Chelesa Presley is the incredible Director of Baby University, and for the last 7.5 years she has put in tremendous energy, creativity, heart, commitment, and hard work into making Baby U everything it can be, day after day.

This November 2025, Clarksdale Baby University is so excited to enter a new season, where it will no longer be part of Spring Initiative, but begin a new stage as part of the Diaper Bank of the Delta. It has been such an honor for Spring to be part of this work for the last decade and we are asking all of our supporters to show as much love as possible to Baby U on its new journey!!

With the many funding challenges around us, Baby U needs our help as a community! The Diaper Bank needs to raise $50,000 in matching funds to make Baby University possible in this next year. Please spread the word and pitch in any amount you can!!

Money can be sent to the Diaper Bank via the following ways:

*Paypal: paypal.me/DeltaDiapers

*Cash App: $DeltaDiapers

A huge shout-out and thank you to Geetha, a member of Education for All (Educationforall.org/ms), for sharing her time, talent, and crocheting material during September for three Zoom sessions to teach our mamas how to crochet a hat for their babies.

The mamas were excited to see the finished product and eager to make more.
