We would like to congratulate Samantha VanDeman, who came to Clarksburg this past summer to photograph the Waldo hotel. She has been appointed to the Juliet Hardtner Women in Arts and Humanities Professorship at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana and given a scholarship to continue her work photographing abandoned hotels and other buildings in Europe.

An intruder entered the Waldo this evening through a rear window. Vigilant citizens informed the police, who quickly captured him. A Clarksburg police officer received minor injuries following the intruder through a broken window. Emily Brown, Michael Brown, and Ryan DeBarr of the Waldo preservation group responded. Emily contacted Green Growth, prospective buyer of the property, while Michael and Ryan secured the property. As of this time, breaking and entering charges will be pressed against the intruder.

Many thanks against tonight's shift of the Clarksburg Police Department for their prompt response and professional work in capturing the offender and securing the site.

Big news!

The City of Clarksburg is eager to announce a contract with an intent to acquire the Waldo Hotel from the Vandalia Heritage Foundation to a private developer. Green Grove Property Management LLC will undertake the project once it is submitted, reviewed and approved. City Manager Howe explained, “The City is supportive of any development to place structures back in a useful and productive state. The City is experiencing new investments and improvements and we applaud the effort by this developer.” Howe continued to say, “We feel as this will continue to expand upon the positive momentum we are experiencing with other on-going developments; including the Gore Hotel and the Robinson Grand Theatre."

Ryan Helton of Green Grove Property Management LLC stated, “I am just excited to help with the rehabilitation and reconstruction of downtown Clarksburg. I believe that Clarksburg is a beautiful city and I love historical towns. I was attracted to the Waldo Hotel Building due to its architectural design. I have several visions for the building including a few luxury apartments, and “Stonewalls Brewery and Pub”, an upscale brewery and pub. The rest of the building I plan to keep open for visitors to enjoy.”

Mayor Goings concluded, “There have been several supporters within the community, as well as the City, whom have been anxiously awaiting the redevelopment of this magnificent structure. Its historical value adds to the great architectural style which exists within our Central Business District.”
