As a teacher, a foster parent and a mother I have experienced many different sides to our Department of Health and Human Resource system. I have seen the kids that move from one school to another because of our lack of foster care homes. I have seen those children who experience daily trauma. Then there are those children whose parents run with kids thinking they can out smart the system but at this point the system is to invested to be out smarted. After watching this for 5 years I looked at my husband and discussed with him about one day being foster parents.
Our now 3 1/2 year old, almost adopted daughter, was brought to us with a plastic hospital bag of clothes ranging from 18 month to 5T and a pair of slipper 7/8. She was and is really tall for her age. She did not fit into the 18 month clothes (too small) and she did not fit into the 5T (too big) nor did her slippers fit ...too small. I didn't want to spend the voucher on clothes that I was unsure of would fit so off to Walmart I went to guess on clothing size and shoes size. After trial and error I found the right size clothes (3T) and shoes (9).
Another placement was a two month old infant who was born prematurely. She came to us with a diaper bag of clothes and some formula. Again clothes ranged from 3 moths to 18 months with 1 newborn outfit. None of these clothes fit this little cutie. We were lucky that I had saved my daughter’s premie clothes because that is what we need for her. However, I would have never been able to figure out her size had it not been for the fact that I had different size clothes available to try on her.
We have had other children, most of whom come to us with nothing but the clothes on their back, some basic toiletries, a small blanket and stuffed animal from DHHR. These children all have immediate needs that require a solution. DHHR does their best to get them started, but they simply do not have the means or capacity to be prepared for anything.
