A Trip to Town

Living in Raymond means I get my mail in Raymond… and not a whole lot else. So today, we took a trip to Clark.

We started with gas and, of course, a snack and cold drinks because it’s hot out and little trips to town almost always turn into more than one stop.

Then we spent a couple hours at the park. And honestly, that’s what hit me today. There was enough there to stay for hours. Kids playing. Parents chatting. Plenty for Blaine to do. Familiar faces. Shade trees. A place that felt alive.

On the way home, I remembered I still had flower pots to fill, and thankfully I had several local options for plants. A few days ago, I picked up wood from the lumber yard and supplies from Ace so I can fix up the chicken coop at home. I can grab chicken feed locally without driving all the way to Watertown. Later tonight, we’ll probably stop for ice cream from Ken’s after a long day outside.

And now we’re debating our evening plans — should we go golfing with Daddy and grab dinner at the golf course, or should we head to the lake and go fishing instead?

And the best part is… both are only a few minutes from home.

None of this sounds huge. But I think that’s exactly the point.

Small towns matter because of the everyday things. The ability to live a quiet life without needing to leave your community for every little thing. The ability to raise kids where they know the people at the park. To grab what you need close to home. To spend less time driving and more time actually living.

Today wasn’t some big adventure. It was just a trip to town.

And honestly, it made me really thankful for what we have here in Clark County.

South Dakota is seeing real progress in strengthening our teacher workforce. Thanks to the teacher apprenticeship pathway, we’ve cut the number of teacher openings in the state by 44% in just the last 3 years!

We will continue investing in our teachers and schools so our students are set up for success.

PIERRE, S.D. – Travel South Dakota’s Tourism Advertising Promotion (TAP) Grant program, in its third year, has awarded a total of $200,000 to assist South Dakota’s tourism industry in garnering additional visitation to tourism-related events.

Governor Larry Rhoden announced Monday at a press conference at Mount Rushmore National Memorial, the State's contribution of $200,000 across the state to 40 separate entities.

“The TAP Grant program is about investing directly in communities across South Dakota so they can promote what makes them unique and bring more visitors in,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “These events drive visitation, support local businesses, and create real opportunities for South Dakotans—especially in our rural areas.”

The purpose of the TAP Grant program is to provide marketing funds for tourism-related events such as festivals, concerts, rodeos, and powwows. This grant program is focused on providing funding to events in smaller towns, cities, and rural areas of the state, but entities and events of all sizes were encouraged to apply. The grants range from $1,000 to $10,000.
