Relay For Life of East Page - Taylor Counties What Happens at a Relay Event

There are many moments that create the Relay experience. Specific details vary by event.

East Page - Taylor counties Relay For Life- Is a very emotional, inspiring event created to raise cancer awareness and as a fund raiser for the American Cancer Society that takes place in Clarinda, Iowa and this year will be Friday, June 7, 2013. But the key moments that all events share in common are listed below:

Survivors Lap
Relay starts with a Survivors Lap – an inspirational time when su

rvivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories we’ve achieved over cancer. We also recognize and celebrate caregivers at Relay For Life. These individuals give their time, love, and support to friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers who face cancer. Luminaria Ceremony
After dark, we honor people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence. Fight Back Ceremony
Last, there is a Fight Back Ceremony, where we make a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer. That personal commitment may be to do something as simple as getting a screening test, quitting smoking, or talking to elected officials about cancer. By taking action, people are personally taking steps to save lives and fight back against a disease that takes too much.

The American Cancer Society, Relay For Life Committee of East Page/Taylor Counties invites the public to attend an open forum meeting in which we will be discussing the option of combining the Relay events for Shenandoah and Clarinda. Currently there are Relay events held in both communities. This meeting will discuss uniting the two events into the Page County, Relay For Life to be held in Shenandoah each year. The meeting will be held on Monday, November 4, 2013, 6:00 pm at Clarinda Regional Health Center, Conference Rooms A & B. If you have questions, comments, or concerns, please attend and discuss them. This will be the only opportunity to do so before a decision is made. Thank you SO much to everyone who came out to make last night so much fun! We had a good turn out and have raised close to $20,000 in the fight against cancer. Teams can still raise money and donations will still count towards this years total through August.

Our Relay is on the way! THIS Friday - June 7th! Come on down to the square with opening Ceremonies starting at 6. We will enjoy watching Joy Tunnicliff's Dance Studio perform, have a ZUMBA demonstration with Sara Bridie leading the way, and BROOK TURNER will be performing from 9:30 to 10:45! Clarinda Regional Health Center and the Cattlemen will be serving hamburgers. Hope to see you there! Please share this status to get the word out!

Starting with small steps can make a big difference. Consider a Relay For Life event to be the start of a commitment to get or stay healthy: serve healthy treats on-site, wear sunscreen, and commit to having one team member on the track at all times. It’s up to each of us to make the guidelines part of our daily lives.

Bank night will be May 30th, 5-6pm at Clarinda Regional Health Center, Conference Room B. You can come and pick up T-shirts for your teams and drop off any funds you have raised. Don't forget to encourage your team members to seek Luminaria donations to line the square with bags on June 7th! PLEASE share this on your pages and encourage others to as well - Thank you!!!
