What does it really mean to be a mentor?

You don’t have to be a counselor.
You don’t have to be a tutor.
You don’t need an extraordinary career or all the answers.

You just need to be willing to show up, listen, encourage, care and believe in a student.

Sometimes, the most meaningful thing you can give a young person is your time, attention, and a positive adult friendship.

Heidi and Dena spent today in Lincoln at the national TeamMates Mentoring annual conference. It was a day full of encouragement, fresh ideas, and powerful reminders of the impact one caring adult can have in the life of a young person.

We are grateful to be part of an organization that believes relationships can change lives. We left inspired, challenged, and excited to bring new ideas back to our community and to continue supporting the students we serve.

Thank you to the mentors who show up every week for our students. We are looking forward to getting started this fall!

🌟 Mentor Monday Spotlight 🌟

This week we’re featuring Chelsea, who has been a TeamMates mentor since August 2025! 💙

Chelsea’s favorite part is the moment her mentee sees her in the lunchroom — “her face lights up the whole room!” From there, it’s all about talking, playing games, and being a little silly together.

Chelsea serves on the TeamMates Clarinda board and felt called to do more — mentoring was the perfect way to give back. She shares that this experience has brought so much light into her life and even shifted her perspective in meaningful ways.

🌟 Mentor Monday Spotlight 🌟

This week we’re featuring Marcia, who has been a TeamMates mentor for about 1.5 years! 💙

Marcia meets with her mentee during lunch and loves the time they spend together — whether it’s playing basketball and volleyball or games like Battleship and Operation. She shares that her mentee is not only competitive, but also patient and full of enthusiasm, making every visit fun and memorable.

She became a mentor to make a difference in a child’s life and show that adults can be fun, supportive, and encouraging. Marcia says she gains just as much from the relationship, especially from her mentee’s zest for life and strong potential as a future leader.
