Last Thursday, nearly 80 members and guests joined us for our annual June Meeting and Party—an evening filled with great food, lively conversation, silent auction shopping, and beautiful photography and stories shared by fellow members. Rod Higbie's photo of a Brown Pelican was selected as the winner of the "Birds Preening" Photo Challenge.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the 2026 Flock Leader Award to Scott Marnoy in recognition of his outstanding service to our chapter. Under Scott's leadership, our field trip program has expanded in both size and variety, introducing more people to the joy of birding. His writing and photography have enriched The Chaparral Naturalist newsletter, and he's even embraced the challenges of technology, learning social media and website management to keep our field trip information current and accessible.

We also celebrated the retirement of Vice President Seth Thompson after 12 years of dedicated service on the Board of Directors. Seth's contributions are too numerous to count. From helping create the Thompson Creek Bird Oasis and supporting Burrowing Owl habitat restoration efforts to serving as our webmaster and tackling countless behind-the-scenes tasks, Seth has quietly and consistently kept our organization running smoothly. His leadership, dedication, and willingness to step in wherever needed have left a lasting mark on our chapter.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for an evening of friendship, celebration, and appreciation for the volunteers who help make our organization thrive.

Help save Jackie and Shadow's nesting area. After months of negotiations, the San Bernardino Mountain Land Trust (SBMLT) has reached a limited agreement with the developer to purchase Moon Camp for $10 million, permanently conserving and protecting nearly 63 acres of this special property. Once acquired, the land will be transferred to the United States Forest Service (USFS), ensuring its preservation for future generations. SBMLT has until July 31, 2026, to raise the necessary funds to make this conservation effort a reality. Read the full history on the website and please consider supporting this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to protect the Bald Eagles on the north shore of Big Bear lake from development. https://savemooncamp.org/

Birding is definitely not a niche activity.
This is from the NPR Marketplace show.
I found it more interesting to listen to it and read it.

More than a third of people in the U.S. spend money on birdwatching. If you’ve ever bought a bird feeder, you’re one of them.

PVBA and the San Dimas Canyon Nature Center had a wonderful afternoon at the LA County Fair on Friday, May 22, 2026! Homeschoolers came out in large numbers, and many families with children stopped by to learn about hawks, falcons, and owls.

Our friend Tim Womick from TreeCircus invited us on stage during both afternoon shows to introduce the Nature Center’s education ambassador birds and encourage fairgoers to visit our booth afterward. This year, Tim added a Q&A session with the kids in the audience, and they asked some fantastic questions!

Many thanks to our amazing volunteers — Michael, Jenny A., Laura, Tina, and our wonderful new volunteers Iris, Megan, Chris, Angela, and Amelia — for making the day such a success.

Our final community outreach event before summer break will be Pride Outside on June 13 from 3:00–6:30 PM at the San Dimas Canyon Nature Center. email [email protected] to volunteer. We hope to see you there!
