Did you know LA almost lost Olvera Street? 🌿
Golondrina tells the true story of Christine Sterling — the woman who saved it.
Set in 1920s downtown Los Angeles, our historically inspired opera weaves together romance, struggle, and triumph in a story that shaped the city we love. Now in a new chamber version, it's ready to reach new audiences and new stages.
Music by L. C. Harnsberger | Libretto by Robert Cartland
Originally produced by Vineyard Touring Opera, 2015 & 2017

Did you know L.C. Harnsberger is not only a member of VTO's board, but also our composer in residence? Here's a clip of the Concerto for Horn and Orchestra from his "Christmas Concerto", performed live at our 2025 Bridging the Centuries concert.

We're thrilled to announce that our 2nd annual symphonic concert returns in June 2026, once again in partnership with Forest Lawn — bringing together volunteer professional musicians for an evening of world premieres by local composers alongside beloved classical repertoire. Stay tuned for details.

None of this would be possible without the man behind the music, Alan Medak. With a career spanning decades and stages from Wisconsin to Southern California, Alan brings both depth of experience and genuine passion to every performance. In 2007, he co-founded VTO with a simple belief: opera per tutti — opera for all. His proudest accomplishment? The 2015 world premiere of Golondrina, an original opera that captivated audiences with its portrayal of historic events in 1920s Los Angeles. Alan's commitment to bringing live classical music to underserved communities is the foundation on which VTO was built — and continues to grow.
