Did you know that April is recognized as Cambodian Heritage Month and as a time of remembrance for the Cambodian Genocide?

In 2018, the State of Oregon and the City of Beaverton formally acknowledged Cambodia’s rich history, vibrant language, and cultural traditions spanning more than 4,000 years. This proclamation uplifted the Cambodian community in Oregon and affirmed our shared commitment to empowering, uniting, and preserving Khmer heritage, history, and language.

In 2025, the Oregon Legislative Assembly adopted HCR17, further recognizing and honoring Cambodian Americans in Oregon and across the United States, while memorializing all those who were lost during the Khmer Rouge.

April is both a celebration of our customs and traditions and a period of reflection. It is a time to honor the resilience of our community, acknowledge the progress we have made together, and remember the lives taken by genocide more than 50 years ago.

We are revisiting our old 2024 post to highlight how far our Oregon community has come — and to recognize the extraordinary dedication of the volunteers whose efforts helped make the passage of HCR17 possible.
