๐ŸŒฟDeep in the jungles of southern Mexico, archaeologists just found a city no
one had seen in over a thousand years. They named it Minanbรฉ โ€” Maya for
"there is no path." To reach it, they cut five kilometers through forest so dense it had hidden an entire city, with temples, plazas, and carved monuments, completely intact. No looting. Untouched. ๐Ÿ›•

But here's what moves me. That same forest โ€” Calakmul โ€” is the last great
stronghold of the jaguar in Mexico. Around five hundred of them still walk there, through the second-largest rainforest in the Americas. ๐ŸŒŽ

๐Ÿพ Five of Mexico's six wild cat species still hunt these ruins. The Maya worshipped the jaguar as a god โ€” a spirit that walked between worlds. Their kings are dust now. Their cities fell silent. But the jaguar? The
jaguar endured. In a way, the wild cats have carried the Maya forward in their spirits. ๐Ÿ†

Big Cat Rescue is proud to support the vital frontline work of Freeland (freeland.org), an international counter-trafficking organization working across Asia, Africa, and Latin America to stop the illegal trade that is one of the greatest threats to wild cats and other endangered species.

Freeland's team of law enforcement and technical experts find and stop traffickers while helping governments, companies, and the public develop recovery and prevention programs โ€” forming, training, and networking task forces, and engaging civil society to raise awareness.

Right now, Freeland is leading a growing global coalition pressing Meta to take action against wildlife traffickers openly using Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger to sell endangered animals and coordinate criminal deals โ€” amassing evidence from every corner of the globe that these platforms are actively being used to profit from the sale and abuse of wildlife.

Beyond that campaign, since 2020 alone, Freeland has trained nearly 3,000 officers to stop wildlife trafficking, supported 356 agencies, rehabilitated 1,646 wild animals, and helped seize $111 million worth of assets from traffickers across 35 countries โ€” proof that this kind of bold, strategic work delivers real results for wild cats and the ecosystems they depend on.

Capable of reaching speeds up to ๐Ÿ•๐ŸŽ ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ก (๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘ ๐ค๐ฆ/๐ก) in short bursts, the cheetah is the ๐Ÿ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐ ๐š๐ง๐ข๐ฆ๐š๐ฅ ๐จ๐ง ๐„๐š๐ซ๐ญ๐ก.

Its lightweight body, flexible spine, long legs, and oversized nasal passages help it accelerate faster than almost any other animal. The distinctive black โ€œtear marksโ€ beneath its eyes help reduce glare and improve focus while hunting during the day.

Unlike lions, tigers, leopards, and jaguars, cheetahs ๐œ๐š๐ง๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐ซ๐จ๐š๐ซ. Instead, they communicate through chirps, purrs, growls, and other vocalizations.
