🐾❤️ THE REALITY OF ANIMAL RESCUE — PLEASE READ WITH AN OPEN HEART ❤️🐾
This post is a in general post about anything in Rescue. We all take a chance with all the dogs were taken to our rescue!
Coco Precious Fur Baby Rescue
I want to take a moment to talk about something that weighs very heavily on my heart. Something that people may not always understand about animal rescue.
RESCUE IS HARD. REALLY HARD. 💔
We take in owner surrenders, dogs and puppies from overcrowded shelters, abandoned animals, and animals that have nowhere else to go. Some come from loving homes, some come from horrible situations, and others come to us with very little information about their past.
When these babies arrive, we do everything we possibly can to give them a second chance at life.
We provide food, shelter, vaccinations, medical care, love, and a safe place to land.
But here is something I wish more people understood.
We cannot always know when a dog or puppy is carrying an illness.
Sometimes these babies come to us looking perfectly healthy. They are eating, playing, running around, wagging their tails, and acting like normal happy puppies.
We quarantine and follow our medical protocols, but sometimes we have very little time with these animals before they are adopted. And unfortunately, some illnesses do not show symptoms right away.
A puppy can look completely healthy one day and become sick the next.
We also take in owner surrenders where the previous owners tell us their dogs have received their vaccinations. They provide us with vaccination records, and we rely on that information being truthful and accurate.
We cannot control what happened before these animals came into our care.
And when a puppy becomes sick after being adopted, please understand something.
💔 WE HURT TOO.
We are devastated. We worry. We lose sleep. We cry. We wonder what we could have done differently.
The very last thing we would ever want is for a family to bring home a puppy and then have to watch that baby become sick.
We would NEVER knowingly adopt out a sick puppy without telling the family. NEVER.
That goes against everything our rescue stands for.
We don’t rescue animals to make money. We rescue because we love them. We rescue because their lives matter. We rescue because somebody has to stand up for the ones who cannot speak for themselves.
And when something goes wrong, it affects everyone.
It affects the adopter and their family.
It affects the foster family who loved and cared for that baby.
It affects our volunteers.
And it affects me personally, because every single animal that comes through our rescue matters to me.
Please understand that rescue is not perfect. We are human. We do our very best, but we cannot predict every illness or every medical emergency.
We take precautions, and we continue learning and improving our procedures because the health and safety of every animal matters.
We ask that adopters understand that puppies, especially young puppies who are still completing their vaccinations, can be vulnerable to illnesses even when they appear healthy.
If your newly adopted puppy becomes sick, please seek veterinary care immediately and contact our rescue so we can work together and address any possible exposure.
What hurts the most is when people assume that a rescue deliberately sent home a sick animal.
Please don’t assume that.
Please don’t forget the countless hours, sleepless nights, money, tears, and sacrifices that go into saving these babies.
We are not a large shelter with unlimited resources. We are a nonprofit, foster-based rescue made up of people who open their homes and hearts to animals in need.
We are doing this because we CARE. ❤️
To every adopter who has shown us kindness, patience, compassion, and understanding, THANK YOU.
To our fosters and volunteers who stand beside us through the good days and the heartbreaking days, THANK YOU.
And to every family who has ever experienced a sick puppy, please know that our hearts are with you. We never want anyone to experience that fear or heartbreak.
At the end of the day, we all want the same thing.
Healthy puppies. Happy families. Forever homes. And animals getting the second chance they deserve. 🐾❤️
Please show compassion to the people who are out there every single day trying to save lives.
Because rescue is hard enough without having to defend the love and dedication we put into every animal we save.
With love,
❤️ Coco Precious Fur Baby Rescue ❤️
