Kindred Spirits Sanctuary

Kindred Spirits Sanctuary Sanctuary for abused, abandoned and disabled farmed animals. Growing a more compassionate world! At Kindred Spirits, farm animals are our friends, not our food.
(234)

Kindred Spirits Sanctuary was founded in late 2003 in response to an overwhelming need for farm animal sanctuaries. Farm animals are exploited every day in our society, and are subject to some of the most horrendous forms of harassment, abuse and neglect. Industrialized or factory farming operates on the basic premise that farm animals are mere commodities, not thinking, feeling beings. Animals t

hat exist in these factories suffer in silence, it's our mission to change that! Kindred Spirits is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to ending the abuse and suffering of farm animals through direct rescue, advocacy, and education. We seek to provide a place where people can connect with these sentient beings and discover their unique (and often humorous!) personalities. We are passionate about helping others form bonds with these remarkable animals, and gladly give tours on scheduled days! Kindred Spirits Sanctuary invites you to come and give a pig a belly rub, or get a kiss from a cow! The Sanctuary is located on just under 75 beautiful acres in Citra, Florida. The 166 sanctuary residents receive around-the-clock care, high quality diets, spacious barns, and green pastures in which to laze and graze. Most importantly, they are treated as individuals and given a loving, peaceful environment where they can live without pain, hunger, or fear of exploitation for their natural lives.

🎃 Save the Date! 🎃
Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 3, 2026!

We're excited to welcome visitors to the sanctuary for a brand new event, a special fall open house: Pigs & Pumpkins.

Details are still coming together, but one thing is certain—there will be pumpkins, pigs, and plenty of smiles. Throughout the day, we'll be tossing pumpkins to our pig residents and letting them do what pigs do best: sniff, investigate, chomp, smash, and enthusiastically destroy a favorite seasonal treat.

It's always a joy to watch their excitement, and we can't wait to share it with you.

More details will be announced as we get closer, but for now, save the date and plan to spend a fall day with the residents of Kindred Spirits Sanctuary. 🎃🐷

As the weather gets hotter, we have to get creative with veterinary care.

When an animal is under sedation, body temperature regulation becomes an even more important consideration. Temperature, pulse, and respiratory rate are always monitored closely, but how we help maintain a safe body temperature can vary.

Sometimes it's cooling fans and ice packs out in the field. Sometimes it's a heating pad in the surgery room. And sometimes it's working on the clinic floor while your feline assistant supervises every move and waits for you to yell, "Scalpel!"

Adaptability is part of the job. Cat assistants are apparently part of the package.

Animals do not ask for perfection from us. Only consideration. They do not measure us by whether we get everything right, but by whether we take the time to care, to learn, and to act with their comfort and dignity in mind. Their capacity to trust us is one of life's greatest gifts.

Special Needs Spotlight: Meet Charlie 👟🐔
Charlie is a 7-year-old Cornish hen with a big personality and a tiny shoe collection.
Cornish hens are bred to grow very quickly, which often leads to painful health problems later in life. Charlie was rescued from a factory farm after the birds were left without food, and one of her wings was so badly infected it had to be amputated.
Despite everything, Charlie has remained endlessly curious and full of determination. She’s always the first to greet visitors, inspect your shoes, and investigate anything new happening around the area.
As she’s gotten older, arthritis in her feet started making it hard for her to get around comfortably… so now she wears soft baby shoes for extra support. Somehow, they fit her personality perfectly.
With her little shoes on, Charlie is back to exploring, scratching in the dirt, and making her daily rounds with her flock — just at her own pace. 💛

Every day at the sanctuary, we hand out 91 medicated sandwiches.
Little peanut butter bundles carrying everything from pain relief and allergy medication to heart support and arthritis care. Some residents only need one a day. Others receive them morning and night.
That adds up to 637 sandwiches every single week.
Every week it takes: • Around 30 pounds of peanut butter
• Countless slices of bread
• 2 very brave volunteers and whoever else gets recruited into sandwich duty
• And more hours than we probably want to calculate.
This is Wart Eye, Warty, Warticia receiving her sandwich while her fellow potbellies gather around her.
Our potbelly herd is getting older, and arthritis is becoming more common throughout the group. The sandwich list keeps growing, so we grow and adapt right along with it.
Sometimes the sandwich list makes us lose our minds a little, but at the end of the day, every sandwich means a resident is receiving the comfort and care they need.
And sometimes sanctuary work looks less like heroic rescues and more like making your 84th peanut butter sandwich of the day.

Hoof trim day: the farm equivalent of a pedicure… but we probably have to use more muscle than at the salon 😂

Every 5–6 weeks, each of our goats and sheep gets a full hoof trim to keep them comfortable, balanced, and moving well. Overgrown hooves can cause pain, joint strain, and difficulty walking, so regular trims are an important part of their care.

But hoof trimming is also more than just maintenance. It gives us the chance to do a true hands-on exam with every animal. We check joints and mobility, feel for swelling or tenderness, look closely at their skin, coat, eyes, and all the little details we might not notice while they’re busy frolicking around the pasture pretending they have no responsibilities.

These routine care days help us catch small issues before they become big problems, and they help us make sure everyone is feeling their best from nose to hoof.
The goats still believe this is a personal attack, of course.

Karina fully intends to take her displeasure out on the side of the barn, horns to metal, after she's done being cared for.
