The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms. 🇺🇸

On the Friday before Memorial Day, May 22 this year, wear a red poppy to honor the fallen and support the living who have worn our nation's uniform. Learn more about National Poppy Day: www.alaforveterans.org/National-Poppy-Day

MEET THE MEMBER: CARYN MOSER

Q: How long have you been a member, and what inspired you to join?
A: I have been a member since 2019. My mother-in-law Belinda encouraged me to join and my husband Brian is very involved with The Legion.

Q: What is your favorite thing about ALA?
A: Hosting events for the community! Like the annual Easter Egg Hunt in the Park, where I am one of the committee Co-Chairs!

Q: What is your favorite ALA event or program?
A: Holiday Bazaar/Too Good to Toss, another event where i am one of the committee Co-Chairs!

Q: What do you wish more people knew about ALA?
A: That when you join you can help out when you can. It's alright if you can't make every meeting or every event. Sometimes it's the little things that help!

Meet the Member: Monica Miller

Q: How long have you been a member, and what inspired you to join?
A: My grandma (Mary Merkle) signed me up to be a Junior Member when I was in 8th grade (14 years ago!). I was inspired to continue being a member because I’ve had so many family members serve. When I was in High School I got the opportunity to help at a BINGO event at the Danville VA. It was a profound moment to behold to meet and speak with many service men and women.

Q: What is your favorite thing about ALA?
A: Being apart of a greater organization with a profound and noble purpose. It truly brings me great joy to put on events to raise money for veterans in need. I love to be rooted in my community and get to know all the women in the CP area that I otherwise wouldn’t have connected with.

Q: What is your favorite ALA event or program?
A: My favorite is the Bazaar. Not only is it a great shopping opportunity, but the benefits go directly to the VA for haircuts. Everyone deserves to look and feel their best. I’m glad I can contribute to that goal!

Q: What do you wish more people knew about ALA?
A: How rewarding it is to be apart of this great group. Not only serving my community, but also to teach younger generations what sacrifices were made for them.

After learning about Honor Flight in 2010, ALA National President Pam Ray took her father, a U.S. Army veteran, on a flight that truly impacted both of their lives. Ray has been a passionate advocate of Honor Flight’s mission since, and her genuine connection to Honor Flight inspired her to lead the national American Legion Auxiliary in sponsoring an all-female veteran Lone Eagle Honor Flight this April. Check out National President Pam Ray’s message about Honor Flight and the ALA's commitment to their mission of gratitude: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RvVIy2AVF4

For many veterans, this is more than a trip — it’s a long-overdue ‘thank you.' ❤️

The ALA-sponsored Lone Eagle Flight is April 13–15. ✈️ Follow along on our social media during those days to experience the journey as it unfolds.

ALA MEET THE MEMBER & OFFICER SPOTLIGHT: MARIA VERKLER (Sergeant-At-Arms)

Maria is another one of the faces behind this page!

Q:How long have you been a member, and what inspired you to join?
A: Since 1991. My husband is in the Legion and I wanted to support him and other Service Members and Veterans!

Q: What is your favorite thing about ALA?
A: Getting to connect with other local women with the same patriotic values, as we support our Service Members and Veterans!

Q: What is your favorite ALA event or program?
A: My favorite program is preparing and sending the Service boxes to servicemen near the holidays. It originally started as a way to send “goodies from home” to service members serving overseas, but has evolved to include sending to those serving in other states as well.

Q: What do you wish more people knew about ALA?
A: I wish people knew about all the work we do and all of the donations we make to support other/different programs.

Q: What does your office do?
A: Sergeant-At-Arms is in charge of the flags, bell, and gavel for all ALA meetings and accompanying guests during officer installation.

Q: Have you held an ALA office before?
A: I have been Sgt-At-Arms and in 1994-1995 was ALA President. During the same time, my husband Rich was Legion Commander! First time in CP that a husband and wife led simultaneously!

Q: What is your favorite memory of ALA?
A: My favorite memory would be the many times we took the Junior Auxiliary Members to Watseka for the Relay for Life. We stayed over night, raised funds, and participated in the walk. We had a good time coming up with themes, costumes, and enjoying the time spent together for a good cause!

Which ALA member or office would you like to know more about? Tag them in the comments below!
