A BRIEF HISTORY The original school building was constructed in 1929. Destroyed by a fire in 1935, the school was rebuilt using the same basic plans with some additions which according to legend, had been originally intended for a different, larger town in the state. The mistake was not discovered until the work on the project had gotten to the point that the only solution was to complete the imposing structure rather than replace it with the intended one. Even today the school is a dominating landmark as one passes through Circleville, WV. The school itself is a national historic landmark registered with the National Park Services National Register of Historic Places in 1995. The building was designed by Ernest C.S. Holmboe, a major architect of public buildings in West Virginia in the early 1900’s. The two story masonry building is in the Georgian Revival style. The columns on the front of the school are the same as the columns on the governor’s mansion in Charleston which was also designed by Mr. Holmbe. The school was also noteworthy by being the last public building constructed with federal funds under the authorization of President Franklin D. Roosevelt through the Works Progress Administration (WPA).

OUR MISSION: To secure businesses and activities that will generate enough revenue to make CHS self-supporting (insurance, maintenance & utilities). Also provide economic development for our community by creating jobs. It is a place for dinners, community activities, etc. and at the same time preserved the historical CHS for future generations.

100 percent of the donations to the nonprofit go directly to support the school. Donations can be made payable to: Circleville High School Preservation Mailing Address: CHS Preservation P.O. Box 83 Circleville, WV 26804
