It’s not only scared dogs who bolt. It’s dogs who were boundary trained, dogs who never left the yard before, dogs who always came back before, friendly dogs, elderly dogs, puppies. Please don’t take a chance that may lead to heartbreaking consequences. Shared from Lost Shelties MN:

“She’s never run off before”, “He always comes back”, “She usually stays close”, “He’s never left the property”, “She never runs out the door”. These are comments from people whose Sheltie went missing.💔 ‘Never’ happens every day. Use safety precautions:
• Leash in unfenced areas. Never off-leash.
• Lock on gate.
• Fix/block fence gaps.
• Door gate/extra barrier at exit doors.
• Crate or safety harness in car.
• Secure fit of harness & Martingale collar.
• Double-leash on walks.
• Emphasize safety info with caregivers.
• ID tags & microchip.

Your Sheltie looks to you to keep them safe. Safety = 💜

courtesy post for these two beautiful 6yr old Shelties who need to stay together in a home with a fenced yard. They recently lost their person, our volunteer💔 and, although they are not from our rescue, we want to ensure they will be safe, loved and cared for as they always have been.

Even if cared for at home or by family:

🧳Going on a trip? Equip your dog’s caregiver for safety, EVEN at home:
• Check the fence for gaps or holes.
• Padlock/combo lock 🔐 the gate.
• Provide door gates for exit doors.
• Discuss Sheltie Safety Precautions: mnsheltierescue.org/LostShelties
• Show how to adjust collar & harness for snug fit.
• Require they leash your dog in unfenced areas at all times.
• Attach an extra tag with caregiver’s info.
• Make a folder with copies of vet records.
• Provide items with your dog’s & your scent.

Take these safety precautions EVEN IF your Sheltie will be cared for in your home or by someone they know well.

As a newer organization, we are here to support current and future Indigenous students and professionals in the field of veterinary medicine. Less than 1% of veterinarians in the United States are Indigenous and we hope to watch that number grow in the future. We are still here and we will continue to be here.

I wish I had known years ago that recognizing and treating my dog’s pain, as a guardian, isn’t necessarily an exercise in tallying specific signs.

There are few behaviours specific to pain, and the ones that do usually point to discomfort don’t always signal a specific kind.

A dog chewing the base of tail could be experiencing itch, GI inflammation, paraesthesias, or gland pathology.

A dog licking their belly might have urinary tract discomfort, digestive upset, allergies, or a skin infection.

A dog with a hunched posture and an unusual gait might have joint pain, nerve issues, or a tummy ache.

One dog might experience all of these at the same time. They might have another condition entirely. We cannot tell by looking.

If you try to explain the sign before you look at the whole dog, you might miss important clues that could make a big difference in their welfare and overall response to care, even – or maybe especially! – if you guessed part of it right.

We are able to adopt in the Twin Cities metro area of MN. Please understand that our priority is to find the right match for Sadie’s needs and, although you are an outstanding Sheltie caregiver, you may not necessarily be the right fit for Sadie but possibly for a different Sheltie in our program.

Protect your precious senior. Sometimes things become less predictable with age.

☀️Even if they never wandered before, as dogs age, they can become confused, and diminished senses make it more difficult for them to find their way home. Enjoy the beautiful weekend together in the yard with your Sheltie safely leashed. Leash=💚
