As a kid, in the 70’s, I remember watching Eagles players and Flyers players compete in charity softball games for my brother. Later as a young adult, I was fortunate to be able to play in the Dave Renshaw tournaments. There were a few other coed leagues and tournaments we played in, as well. So when my dad died in 2015, it seemed like a no-brainer to host a co-ed softball tournament to raise money for his scholarship foundation.
But what started out as a way to help me grieve his loss turned into a great fundraising opportunity, which has enabled us to give out so many scholarships to so many outstanding young people.
Amazingly, 22 of the 147 winners were in attendance today, either as players or spectators. How about that?!?!
Today was our 10th annual Bob Kenney Scholarship Softball Tournament. And it was a huge success, because of all the fine people and generous sponsors.
But really the reason that today has become my favorite day of the year is pretty simple. It’s a chance for me to reconnect with so many old friends and a way to make some new ones.
It is also so fulfilling to see moms and dads playing with their kids. To see my cousins share a field. And today, I was able to play alongside my two sons and my wife - on the field I grew up playing on! I’m excited that the weather held out today. And I’m excited that we raised a ton of money again. But I’m really excited that I got to watch my friends play with their children and I was able to experience that same joy. Hope we can continue to do this for many, many years. Thank you to Riverside Township and Del-Riv Youth Sports for allowing us to use the fields, to all the coaches and players, to the umpires, to all the volunteers, to all the sponsors and everyone who just came out to watch. THANK YOU!
