This photo/postcard shows the aftermath of the 1917 automobile fatality on Reid's Hill in Cincinnatus. Killed was Fred Blanchard, 25-year-old son of Levi and Della Blanchard. Levi was known as "Editor Blanchard" of The Cincinnatus Times, and his children were an integral part of getting the newspaper to the people of Cincinnatus. When Levi died in May of 1925, the subscription list read 950. In September of 1925 the Blanchard family sold the newspaper to the Cortland Standard. Fred is listed in the 1910 census as a type setter.

We have received a packet of thank you letters and drawings from the CCS sixth graders who helped us clean two of the Pomeroy historical signs in town in early June--the Academy and the Elmer A. Sperry signs.

And everything they wrote is true: It was one beauty of a spring day; there really was a little girl named Ruth Holmes who lost her pencil in the boardwalk while walking to school; school did shut down early every spring, when the boys had to work on the farms; there was a bell rope that ran up the center of the school; there was plenty of vinegar and water to spray the signs; and we did indeed play a sequencing game that reinforced the chronology of inventor Elmer Sperry's life.

The students heartily thanked us, and we heartily thank them right back. History experienced in the great outdoors is history that is readily taken in and readily stored away for a long time.

This afternoon (6/19) two of our CAHS board members were invited to photograph this restored circa 1890's Corning & Haskins evaporator.

In the spring of 1878 Burdett R. Corning bought DeForrest Kingman's hardware business in Cincinnatus. In 1889 he took his son-in-law, George A. Haskins, as a partner, and the firm continued as Corning & Haskins for nearly 40 years. Besides doing a general hardware business, they were extensive manufacturers of maple sugar making equipment--this evaporator being an example.

The original tin siding has been replaced, but the original cast iron, with a little welding, is still in place. What an exciting piece of Cincinnatus history.

NOTE: The original pan is long gone.

Draven Reynolds is the 2026 recipient of Cincinnatus Area Heritage Society's scholarship for a senior showing genuine interest in local history. Draven volunteered to rake the many small branches and paint chips when the south side of Heritage Hall was being painted in June of 2025. In his application he states that keeping the society's 1832 building in tip-top shape will encourage our community to care for other local buildings of note. We liked that notion!

NOTE: The CCS certificate that Draven is holding should read Cincinnatus Area Heritage Society.

It happened today: June 12, 2026. Cincinnatus Lady Lions Softball Team headed to the NYS Class D State Semifinals. From waiting, to lining up the vehicles, to heading toward and boarding the bus, it was half an hour of splendid local history in the making.
