Access to communication and a fixed address promotes dignity.
People experiencing homelessness are asked to jump through hurdles and navigate already complex systems — but without the access that comes via a place of their own, the barriers to permanent housing become even more daunting. Applying for jobs, receiving mail, taking calls from case managers, doctors, and employers, securing necessary documents like IDs, connecting with family and friends, voting in elections, receiving necessary packages…all requiring a fixed address.
We are committed to promoting the dignity of all people experiencing homelessness in Greater Cincinnati, and we believe that includes communications access.
For years, guests at MMH have had the opportunity to use our address as their own to receive mail that gets sorted and kept safely for them in one of our hundreds of mailboxes. They can use our phone to make calls, and we will write down and post any messages left for them on a board in our lobby. They can even leave their own notes on the board for their friends, case managers, and other community members.
There are few things more satisfying than sorting through the stacks of mail that come in each day and seeing a letter that a guest has been waiting on and knowing how thrilled they will be to receive it. Access promotes dignity, and dignity is the beginning of hope.
