A morning walk became a lifesaving mission. 🐾

Earlier this year, Dan DiCadilo was walking his dog Gozier when she began barking insistently. She was laser focused on a nearby house. Dan didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. He tried pulling her along, but she kept edging him nearer to the house.

As they drew closer, Dan discovered a woman lying unresponsive outside in the cold wearing nothing but a white robe. He called 911 and Gozier remained by the woman's side until help arrived.

It turns out that the woman is living with Alzheimer's. Fortunately, she survived after spending a week in the ICU. The town of Ashland, Virginia officially recognized Gozier’s lifesaving instinct. “If it wasn’t for Gozier, I would have never stopped because I didn’t see anything,” said Dan.

Thank you to our national corporate partner Edward Jones for sharing this story. Dan is a financial advisor for the firm. And a special thank you to Gozier for her heroism.

The bond between sisters is one of life's most enduring gifts. For Judy Halverson, that bond became the foundation of over a decade of raising awareness, funds and showing up — year after year — for her sister Sheri, who is living with Alzheimer's.

Judy first noticed signs of the disease when Sheri began dismissing small memory lapses in conversation. She joined her sister at a doctor's appointment to share her concerns. After some testing, Sheri was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

After her sister's diagnosis, Judy connected with the Alzheimer's Association and began attending local education programs, learning everything she could about the disease in an effort to support her sister. That is when she and Sheri learned about Walk to End Alzheimer's.

At their first Walk, Sheri arrived in a white straw hat, purple boa and purple walking shoes — showing off her unique style. "It was a fun day for her being surrounded by all her family and friends," Judy recalled.

Each year, Judy continues as team captain, providing "a time for friends and family to come together to share stories of Sheri and appreciate the memories that tie us together." This fall will be the team's eleventh year participating in Walk to End Alzheimer's.

💜 On National Sisters Day, we're grateful for volunteers like Judy, who show up year after year for their sisters and for every family impacted by Alzheimer's. Join Judy and find a Walk to End Alzheimer's near you at alz.org/walk.
