🎉 Weekend Top Tip! 📋⚽

Be comfortable with silence — Silence after a tough result can feel unbearable for us as parents, but children often just need time and space to process what’s happened, not our words filling in the gap. Resist the urge to reach for blame and excuses to fill it.

Could you try just sitting with them quietly this week and see what happens?

🎉 Weekend Top Tip! 📋⚽

Closed questions get closed answers — try swapping “did you win?” for something open like “what was the best bit for you today?”. Really listen to how they saw it, rather than listening just to respond.

What question could you try this week you have never asked before?

🎉 Weekend Top Tip! 📋⚽

The first moment after the final whistle.

How you greet your child immediately after a match matters more than what you say next — something consistent and positive, regardless of the result, tells them you’re not swept up in the outcome either. It also role-models exactly the response you’d want from them.

What’s your go-to greeting, win or lose?

🎉 Weekend Top Tip! 📋⚽

What the sideline needs from you?

One count found 134 tactical instructions shouted from the sideline in just 40 minutes of grassroots soccer — one every 18 seconds. Children don’t want a coach on the sideline, they want someone who loves them to be there, calm and theirs.

Reflect: This weekend, could you try just being the parent who’s there?
