Our hearts are with the victims of domestic violence whose lives have been tragically taken, and with the families, children and loved ones left grieving. Every life lost is a devastating reminder of the urgent need to protect those experiencing violence.
An investigation by the USA TODAY Network Ohio found that one in three shooters in intimate partner or domestic violence killings used a fi***rm they were legally prohibited from possessing. This troubling finding, coupled with rising domestic violence incidents in our community, underscores the urgent need for stronger enforcement of existing laws, greater accountability, earlier intervention and access to emergency shelter and safe housing for those fleeing violence.
At YWCA Greater Cincinnati, we see firsthand the devastating impact of domestic violence on individuals and families. Survivors deserve to feel safe, to be heard and to have access to the resources and protections they need.
We cannot accept these tragedies as inevitable. Preventing domestic violence requires a collective commitment from law enforcement, policymakers, community organizations and all of us to recognize warning signs, protect survivors, hold offenders accountable and ensure that emergency shelter and stable housing are available to help survivors rebuild their lives in safety.
Every person deserves to live free from violence and fear.
