Congenital Heart Alliance of Cincinnati

Congenital Heart Alliance of Cincinnati CHAoC is made up of a dedicated group of volunteers, most of whom have been affected personally by CHDs.

Congenital Heart Alliance of Cincinnati (CHAoC) is a nonprofit, philanthropic foundation, established in 1940 (originally named Children’s Heart Association of Cincinnati). The CHAoC works diligently to raise funding to help overcome congenital heart defects (CHDs), with project grants given primarily for precedent-setting research, collaborative information sharing, and acquisition of life-saving

equipment. They are loved ones, parents, or grandparents to children born with CHDs, adults surviving with CHDs, and medical professionals who work tirelessly to care for those with CHDs. Thanks in part to the research and programs funded by the CHAoC, the premature death rate for those born with a heart defect has decreased by more than 37% over the past 20 years. Today, an average of 50% of those with CHDs are living healthy, active lives into adulthood. Through early diagnosis and follow-up care, the overall cardiac health of those living with CHDs has improved greatly. However, there is much work remaining to help more children and adults overcome CHDs. With half of babies born with CHDs still likely to lose their lives during childhood, the CHAoC’s fight continues — at full swing.

Congratulations to our 2026 Maggie Baumann Memorial Scholarship recipient, Josephine!

Living with congenital heart disease has shaped her passion for improving the patient experience and advocating for those living with chronic health conditions. Through her work as a patient ambassador, hospital teen board member, mentor, and advocate, she has already demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to helping others feel heard and supported.

As she pursues a future in psychology and healthcare, she hopes to improve how young people with chronic conditions understand their diagnoses, advocate for themselves, and transition into adulthood with confidence.

Her spirit of resilience, compassion, and service embodies the legacy of Maggie Baumann, and we are honored to support her educational journey.

Congratulations, Josephine! We look forward to seeing the impact you will make in the world. ❤️

The Maggie Baumann Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a student living with congenital heart disease who plans to pursue a degree in a healthcare-related field.

We had the honor of putting together small Mother’s Day care packages for the incredible moms spending their day in the Cardiac ICU.

While this isn’t where anyone hopes to be, we hope these gifts bring a moment of comfort and love to women who are showing unimaginable strength.

We had so much fun assembling each package and thinking about the amazing moms who would receive them. Wishing all mothers - especially those in the hospital this weekend - a day filled with love in every possible way. 💙💐

This Nurses Week, we want to honor the extraordinary nurses who care for and advocate for the congenital heart disease community every single day.

From the NICU to the cath lab, clinic visits to ICU stays, and every milestone in between you are the steady hands and compassionate hearts guiding families through their hardest and most hopeful moments.

Thank you for the comfort you provide, the lives you impact, and the strength you bring to this community. We are endlessly grateful for all that you do. ❤️

We are proud to congratulate this year’s recipients of "The Riley" Hughes Scholarship Award - Landon Pegram and Rita Warnecke. The Riley Hughes Scholarship Award is presented to student-athletes in the congenital heart community who demonstrate resilience, perseverance, and a commitment to personal growth through the game of golf by participating in SCRATCHgolf and First Tee-Greater Cincinnati & No. Kentucky.

It was an honor to have the recipients and their families join us following our golf outing last month to celebrate this meaningful moment. We were especially grateful to have Riley’s family in attendance, along with Spencer Timmel, Trustee and founder of Scratch Golf, who helped present the award.

We also want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Hughes family for making this scholarship possible. In the face of unimaginable loss, their commitment to honoring Riley’s life through this award continues to create opportunities for others and carry forward a legacy that is changing lives.💙

For nearly three decades, a simple heart-shaped pillow has carried so much comfort.

Since 1997, we’ve provided therapeutic heart pillows to children recovering from open heart surgery at Cincinnati Children’s - each one designed to offer physical support, protection, and a small sense of security during a difficult time.

To date, approximately 5,650 pillows have been placed into the arms of brave patients on their road to healing.

It’s a small gesture, but one filled with care, comfort, and a reminder that they’re never alone. We are sending all the positive thoughts to this brave kiddo. ❤️
