Mental Health Works

Mental Health Works Mental Health Works is a nonprofit advocacy organization promoting support for quality mental health services in Hamilton County.

The Hamilton County Mental Health levy will be on the ballot for renewal, and it’s important to remember that, “It won’t raise taxes!” Mental health services are important to the fabric of our community and our quality of life. The levy provides:
Mental health services to children with emotional problems
Treatment, housing, and job training for severely mentally disabled adults
Help for families i

n crisis
In 2015 almost 24,000 adults and children directly benefited from mental health services funded by the levy. These services funded through this levy help individuals, adults, and children in our community lead more self-sufficient, productive lives. The levy raises approximately 80% of the funding for the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board’s mental health budget. The 2.99 mills raise almost $34 million annually, but this is just a renewal and won’t raise taxes. The levy costs the owner of a $100,000 home $48.51 annually, the same amount they are paying now--$4/month. Again, this levy will not raise your taxes

Issue 9 will provide more mental health care for kids and teens like Keylan, who shares first hand how impactful-and life saving- that care is right now. Thank you, Keylan!

"I feel like there are a lot of kids out there who've been through what I've been through, and all they need is somebody who they can talk to and they can trust...getting programs out there can save a lot of lives, because they need it. They need someone they can talk to."
-Keylan, 18 year old Talbert House client

Our intern and future nurse, Gretchen, has seen first hand as a young person and nursing student why we need to vote yes on Issue 9. Read her full statement below. Thank you, Gretchen!

“Mental health is critical in the health of people of all ages. A person will never be fully healthy if their mental health has not been taken care of, and everyone deserves a chance to live their lives free of addiction, anxiety, or depression. As a future nurse, I have seen how patients with altered mental health and depressive disorders significantly impact their health journey. Mental health needs to be seen as more important so that patients can get holistic care. As a young person in the world, I have seen so many people my age struggle with these issues and are barely able to make it through the day before we even have full-time jobs, since these mental health issues are becoming more prevalent. I have seen the need for mental health care in my internships and my clinical because how almost every person I have interacted with has had an altered mental state where they could significantly benefit from receiving mental health care. I support the mental health levy because of how many people could benefit from the funding which would vastly improve the quality of life here in Hamilton County.”
