Special Operations legend Arthur D. “Bull” Simons was born on this day in 1918. His service spanned World War II through Vietnam to include the Raid at Cabanatuan in the Philippines and the Son Tay Raid in North Vietnam. In 1979 he was hired by Ross Perot to plan and lead a mission to rescue two Electronic Data Systems employees arrested in the Iranian Revolution and imprisoned in Iran. That rescue mission is detailed in the book ON WINGS OF EAGLES by Ken Follett.

I was able to spend time with Mr. Perot on two occasions, talk about the mission in Iran and see artifacts from Son Tay.

Colonel Simons’ legacy is honored with a statue at the JFK Special Warfare Museum facing the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. On one side of its base are the words:

“HISTORY TEACHES THAT WHEN YOU BECOME INDIFFERENT AND LOSE THE WILL TO FIGHT SOMEONE WHO HAS THE WILL TO FIGHT WILL TAKE OVER.”

-COLONEL “BULL” SIMONS / SON TAY RAID / NOVEMBER 21, 1970.

On the other side are the words: WHO WILL GO? “SEND ME.”

His headstone in Barrancas National Cemetery, Section 36, Site 1956 reads:

MURPHY'S LAW OF COMBAT
1. You are not superman.
2. If it's stupid but works, it isn't stupid.
3. Never share a foxhole with anyone braver than you are.
4. No plan survives the first contact.
5. If your attack is going really well, it's an ambush.
6. The important things are always simple.
7. The simple things are always hard.
8. The easy way is always mined.
9. If you are short of everything except enemy, you are in combat.
11. Friendly fire - isn't.
12. If enemy is in range, so are you.
13. Things that must be together to work, usually can't be shipped together.
14. Anything you do can get you shot - including doing nothing
15. Professional soldiers are predictable, but the world is full of amateurs.
16. Murphy was a grunt.
