I'll tell you, the WEST helpline has been demoralizing lately.

So few people follow the directions in our greeting (send a pic and the area of town where the animal is located - that's it! That's all ya gotta do!). People trap mamas and are in a panic because they are left with the orphans. Or they send an address and say something like, "Go get this animal or something is going to kill it."

So when someone simply calls, sends a photo and location (NOT the street address), then brings you the animals and takes your advice (in this case, keep the dog on a leash until the bunnies disperse), I can't tell you how grateful I am. And relieved.

Thanks to Amanda for doing all of the above today. Her dog found a bunny nest and two babies were injured, so she brought them to me. The remaining babies were returned to the nest and she'll keep it covered and her dog on a leash until the bunnies have dispersed in a couple of weeks or so.

It's not hard to be a good human. You just have to be willing to tolerate a little bit of inconvenience!

Girlfriend. I was just refilling your food dish, and you BITE me?

Eleanor is ready for release, but release is not yet ready for Eleanor! She has just about a week to go before Anna takes her to her nature preserve in Jackson, where she has a terrorist-proof enclosure.

Until then, I'm timing my efforts to restock her food and water to coincide with when she's snuggled up in her coconut shell and I can withdraw my old, arthritic hand before she can attack again.

Little ingrate!

The skunklets are weigh over a pound now and will be going out to a prerelease enclosure today. I'm kinda bummed about it because I love having them inside so I can watch their hijinx whenever I'm in my facility room. But they need to wild up and forage and do skunk stuff, and they definitely need more room.

Last night I gave them a mouse (purchased from RodentPro, humanely euthanized), cut into chunks, and most of it was just redistributed around the cage rather than consumed. But they love eggs and pretty much everything else I give them that is not a fruit or vegetable. We're working on that!

New critical intake. This juvenile opossum was either dog or cat caught, based on the wounds on her neck and head. At this point she does not seem to have use of her rear limbs, but I'm not sure about that yet because she is so thin and weak. She has obviously been struggling for a couple of days given the amount of fly strike in her fur.

Remember, animals with fly strike should always be considered critical, even if you don't see injuries. Time is of the essence in getting those eggs removed before they hatch into maggots and start eating healthy tissue.

Send this angel all your good stuff!

Today is the last full day of our fundraiser! I'm waiting for the final participant update to see who completed 75 surveys and will be entered into the drawing for the Angie Pickman print and the $200 Visa gift card. If you finish 75 surveys TONIGHT, please comment below and I'll add your name to the prize wheel.

All prizes will be mailed out this week!

Fred here is not overweight. He's just big b***d. Or maybe the size of his head is out of proportion to his body. Whatever! He's practically perfect in every way.

Fred is ready to be in an outdoor enclosure but I'm holding off until all three kits are at least a pound. Angela has 16.5 grams to go, which should happen tomorrow!

Raising orphaned skunks is basically parenting toddlers who can gas you. And just like toddlers, they have opinions about vegetables.

My current strategy: hide them in formula, yogurt, and fruit baby food and pray they don’t notice. Also focus on one syllable veggies - toddlers usually like those.

Spoiler: they noticed, and are not impressed with peas and corn. The jury is still out on carrots.

Another week of intakes and releases and everything in between, here at WEST! Remember, our fundraiser ends on Tuesday, so please try to complete your surveys today and tomorrow - every survey counts, even if you don't get to 75!

This might look like a ridiculously large pile of greens for two small bunnies — but it’s actually just enough for a couple of hours!

Weaning and adult cottontails must eat constantly. Their main food sources — native greens like clover, violet, plantain, and dandelion — are low in nutrients, so they make up for it by eating more. But beyond that, cottontails are hindgut fermenters. They rely on constant food intake to keep their digestive tract moving and maintain the delicate balance of beneficial gut bacteria in their cecum.

Tomorrow is the last full day of our Hundred X Causes fundraiser! WEST Wildlife Rehab needs your support to keep caring for animals like these two. Complete as many surveys as you can today and tomorrow — every survey counts, and every dollar makes a difference.
