walnut hills area council

walnut hills area council WH Area Council meets in person at 6:30p on the second Thursday of every month. All are welcome. It’s not just our residents who are diverse.

The Walnut Hills Area Council was founded in 1965 as a voice to represent the interests of the community. We are recognized by the City of Cincinnati as the representative entity for Walnut Hills. In 2013 Cincinnati City Planning Commission formally adopted a Form-Based Code in Walnut Hills. It allows retail, commercial, office, and residential spaces to mix within the same development. Form-based

code ensures that new or remodeled structures fit in with what is already there. HISTORY
Walnut Hills, since its founding, has been known for its cultural, ethnic, religious and socio-economic diversity. One of the oldest neighborhoods in the city of Cincinnati, it was first settled by Reverend James Kemper in 1804. The Kemper Homestead was the oldest house in Cincinnati, a two-story log house, located between Park Avenue and Kemper Lane north of Windsor Street. FEATURES
Located just 2 miles northeast of downtown Cincinnati, Walnut Hills is home to a broad range of historic, cultural and civic organizations:

The Harriet Beecher Stowe House is an historic site, focusing on the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin. http://stowehousecincy.org/

The first of nine Cincinnati Carnegie libraries, the Walnut Hills branch, opened on Kemper Lane in 1906. http://www.cincinnatilibrary.org/branches/walnuthills.html

Peebles' Corner Historic District, focused around the East McMillan and Gilbert Avenue intersection, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The intersection, to this day, remains a key crossroad to many different neighborhoods. Our area boasts a rich variety of architectural styles including French Renaissance, Late Victorian, Classical Revival, Italianate and Art Deco. Rookwood fireplaces are not uncommon. Along with neighboring Mt. Adams, we share one of Cincinnati’s great treasures, Eden Park. The Cincinnati Art Museum, Krohn Conservatory, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Seasongood Pavilion and Mirror Lake are some of its cultural and recreational offerings. http://www.cincinnatiparks.com/index.php/eden-park

There are hundreds of creatives working here, both individually and in artist collectives – sculptors, painters, jewelers, ceramic and glass artists, musicians, dancers, writers, illustrators, photographers, designers and architects. The Melrose YMCA and the Bush Recreation Center each offers an array of fitness programs and activities for all ages. Our community gardens and local food banks are utilized by the Walnut Hills Kitchen, the Walnut Hills Pantry, the Church of the Advent’s Open Door Ministry as well as other organizations to provide food security for those in need. More than 30 traditional and non-denominational houses of worship are available throughout our area. Walnut Hills is a warm and welcoming community. It’s a great place to live whether you are a long-time resident, employed nearby, renting your first apartment or raising a family.

Yesterday, the Walnut Hills Trifecta had the honor of welcoming more than 600 3rd and 4th graders from various schools throughout Greater Cincinnati to our community! Shout out to our own Frederick Douglass Elementary and Empowered by the Arts Academy who also ioined us in welcoming the students.

Our community partner, Dancefix Foundation hosted Kids Dance Dav at the Cincinnati Parks Foundation Eden Park Seasongood Pavilion. Students were able to showcase a dance they mastered during Dancefix Foundation's in school programs to music mixed by Cincinnati Music Accelerator

Students were provided transportation, a bagged lunch from community partner La Soupe, and a t-shirt in our neighborhood colors. 🧡💙💚🖤

We experienced exciting performances and participation from our local community arts organizations including Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati Ballet, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Drums for Peace, Revolution Dance Theatre, The Well, Q-Kidz Dance Team, Cincinnati Kung Fu, and Visual Artist Evan Verrilli.

Dancefix Foundation created this day to foster joy, build community, and offer an opportunity for many youth to enjoy our park while seeing a live performance.

In addition to Frederick Douglass Elementary and Empowered by the Arts Academv, Kid's Dance Day school partners included Mercy Montessori, Midway, Fairview, S.C.P.A., Kilgor, Hartwell, and North College Hill Elementary Cincinnati Public Schools

*disclaimer
While the students spent several weeks practicing their dance moves, Madame J did not🤣🤣🤣 However, we felt that this video did capture the spirit of the event!

Thanks to Rosie and Mr. Redlegs from the Cincinnati Reds and Queen Bee from Flying Pig Marathon for entertaining us with their dance off!

Did you know?

WAIF is the ONLY community radio station in Cincinnati and was founded right here in Walnut Hills!

In 1970, Thomas Knox, Jr. founded the Radio Workshop in the basement of the Alms Apartments. Realizing how the power of radio could serve as a great tool for community building, he trained youth while also providing on-air experience in collaboration with WEBN FM. Over the years, more than 500 radio talents were trained through the Radio Workshop. 📻🎙

In 1973, Mr. Knox and others began organizing for a radio station and in December 1975, WAIF first aired on 88.3 FM. Mr. Knox served as a founding board member of WAIF and to this day, it continues to be a volunteer-led radio station with diverse programming that serves our community.

In honor of the accomplishments of Thomas Knox, Jr., the City Of Cincinnati Government declared December 5, 2025, as his day! 👏🏾🙌🏾❤️

Congratulations to WAIF on celebrating 50 years! May we all continue to celebrate the legacy of Thomas Knox, Jr. for years to come. 🎉

Shout out to Rosho Awards & Graphics for the award!
