Dear current and former members and friends,

At our most recent meeting, the Board of Directors for the Ohio River Valley Clinical Social Work Society voted unanimously to begin to take steps to close the Society. This has been a difficult decision, but a possibility that has frequently been in the background of discussions since I became involved in early 2014.

We did not arrive at this decision without considerable deliberation. The Board itself has experienced 100% turnover in recent years and has had lots of fresh energy to breathe new life into the Society. Capitalizing on this, we have put significant efforts into events: CEUs, Fall Gathering, Spring Awards, which have been well-planned and successful, but under-attended. We expect that some our challenges with engagement are due to an increase in opportunities for connecting with peers and receiving CEU's.

Additionally, we have put energy into attempts to increase membership, but these, too, did not yield the results for which we hoped. This past year has been incredibly challenging with the roles of VP/Program Chair and Membership Chair being empty and the remaining board members doing our best to fill in the gaps. Over the past 5 years, paid membership has decreased from a 65 in the 2013-2014 membership year to just 25 this year. Additionally, membership has shifted from being primarily individuals in private or group practice to those in agencies, thereby shifting members' needs and availability for programming.

As we begin to move toward closure, we invite you to join us in discussion. We will work to be transparent in our communications. Most importantly, we want to make intentional decisions related to our remaining funds that are in alignment with the mission & vision of the Society.

There are multiple ways to join us in these conversations:
*Members are always welcome to attend Board meetings, which are scheduled for the 3rd Monday of each month from 7-8:30pm at my home. Please RSVP so I can send you my address & plan for enough seating. The next meeting is April 16th.

*Contact any Board member

If anyone having paid for membership this year (July 2017-present) feels that they did not receive their dues' worth, please contact Mike Voegele, Treasurer, to request a refund.

Our last event of the year will be participating in the NAMI Walk on May 12th and invite you to join our team.

I want to thank my fellow Board members for joining me in these difficult conversations and to all of you for the opportunity to serve you over the last three years.

Thank you,
Emily Resnik
President, ORVCSWS

Happy International Women’s Day!

over the past months i’ve seen issues addressed that i thought never would be in the mainstream—from and Times Up Now to the young activists finding their voice and shaking the world—thank you.
the trailblazers before me laid the ground that i am able to speak on. no one does it alone.
progress is when the work we do today makes the next generation’s tomorrow easier. it’s when they’ll go out and accomplish twice as much as we ever could. it’s when i’ll be 50 years old and all the babies are casually best-selling poets and authors cause it’s now a career that’s more accessible for them than it was for us today.

Many clinicians have heard clients say that their pet provided them with a sense of purpose and personal value. Here's a piece reporting some meta-analysis of research on that topic.

Apart from those unfortunate moments when your dog or cat leaves an unholy mess on the floor, or when they nefariously chew their way through a pillow, most would say that pets bring about an abundance of happiness – but what does science have to say on the subject? Although the effect of owning a...

Those of us who work with those with mental illness know how true it is that they are more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators. The common assumption that there is a high correlation between mental illness and violence creates numerous problems for our society. This is a good read.

Research challenges the supposed link between mental illness and violence.
