May 2026-News Update Greater Cincinnati Decorative Artists

Well, the big event, our annual Retreat, was a great success. Everyone had a great time. The food and the weather cooperated. And……it was all put together by a handful of people that made sure everything would go according to plan, and by golly it did.!.

Pat Hull headed up the “herd” as Chair, followed by Sandie Tieman, Suzanne Fairbanks, Raffle Baskets, Peggy Hermes, Decorating, Joann Sharpshire, Goody Bags, Nancy Vincent, Registrar, Sherida England, Art Show, Peggy Lenheart, Decorations, JoAnn Huerich, Table Set Ups for classes, Judy Helmes, Folders for attendees, Melanie Wilmhoff, Higher Ground Liaison, Stephanie Hauser, Teacher Liaison, Jan Stine, “all around as needed” girl.

Whie they each have a specific job, they are also on deck for everything everywhere. Together, they make the whole thing a great success. Thanks Ladies.

The Chairperson for 2027 has been selected. Sandie Tieman will take over the reins, and a theme has been chosen “Peace, Love and Painting” and a committee selected to do it all again, as they have been doing since the 80’s. These ladies begin working the day after the prior event ends.

There were a lot of new people in attendance who were able to experience the talents of the many teachers who taught the classes. We are so lucky as an organization to be able to count on the talent of these fabulous teachers without whom there would be no classes. Hats off to you all

As for the painting group, lots of after meeting classes, another seminar, a service project, and a membership project have been designed and ready to go for July 12.
Sandie Tieman will be teaching this class. Trust me when I tell you that she is the best at teaching acrylic classes for all levels. This is a class specifically designed for beginners who are interested in learning something new and an opportunity to meet others wanting a new experience.
A 12x12 flat board is decorated with a beehive, bees and “Be Kind” always a good theme. You don’t want to miss this event! It is always a fun time for the people interested in painting and a good time to meet new people. Go to the GCDA webs site for the actual picture of the project. We hope that some of you will join us for this event. You will not be disappointed. Check the web site for photos of the project.
There is no charge for this class, and we welcome family members and friends. For a photo of the project and any additional information go to the web site. We would love to see you and share our “passion for painting” with you.

As for the regular classes after meetings Nancy Vincent taught a black and white ProJect titled “Five Cardinals.” 17 of our members enjoyed the class.

In June JoAnn Huerich designed a commemorative piece for the 250-year celebration. This is a piece of canvas that wraps around a storage jar. Painted in acrylics, a nice addition for celebrating the birthday of our country. Jar is not provided and can be purchased at Dollar Tree. This class is $8.00 for members and $18.00 for non-members. Check out the web site for photos and sign-up information. This is such a nice project, you could design other themes for holidays, etc.
In August and September we feature Susan Parrett and Diane Glover. All of these after meeting classes are 2-2-1/2 hours and are geared for a new experience in different mediums and surfaces. We welcome newcomers. On September 26, our own Maureen Born will be teaching our second seminar. Details to follow next time.

October meeting-service Project. In November Pat Hull will be teaching a colored pencil project. This is a great line-up for the following months, different projects, different mediums, something for everyone. Please consider joining us. Members and non-members are always welcome. Monthly meetings are held on the second Sunday of each month, with the exception of Mothers Day, April Retreat month and December.

We had an Udderly Good Time at the 2026 GCDA Painting Retreat, "Paint till the Cows Come Home!" 73 creative women filled the area! Attendees came from the tri-state area of Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Michigan brought in 24 artists, and there were individuals from Canada, Tennessee, and Georgia. Great classes, good food, amazing, generously-filled raffle baskets, and a wonderful art show courtesy of the attendees.
And now we're preparing for the 2027 Retreat with the theme, "Peace, Love and Painting." Yes, we're going back to the '60s and '70s, so break out your bell-bottom pants, hippie attire, and flowers for your hair! Save the dates: April 9, 10, 1, 2027. Can't wait to see you all back again!

Greater Cincinnati Decorative Artists-March 2026
By Jude Creager (if I forgot anyone or anything, I sincerely apologize)

Time is flying faster and I am having a hard time keeping up! As promised, we will focus on retreat teachers and upcoming teachers at the monthly meetings and seminars. We are so lucky to have so much talent surrounding us! and the generosity of those willing to share it with us.

On the 8th, Peggy Hermes taught the flowerpot mentioned last month. There was a full class of very satisfied painters. And on the 14th I taught a seminar to 12 students. Thanks to all for your support and for taking the class.

RETREAT 2026!!! Are you ready, gathering your painting gear? The teachers are preparing instructions and samples and supplies and are gearing up for the big event. It is almost time!

Teri Hostetler was originally from West Virginia before moving to Indiana. She and a group of others began painting with decorative painting teacher in 1981. She felt she needed to learn the techniques instead of “winging it” on her own. I am sure you’ll agree she did that and more. While the original teacher is no longer with the group the others still paint together. She retired as a special-ed teacher after 38 years and began teaching her very defined skills to others. She feels blessed she has been given an inborn artistic talent, a gift for teaching others, and being given so much. Her gifts show through in her painting colors and skills.

Michelle Grindley has been painting for over 40 years. She was a member of an auxiliary group for Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where many of the members were painters. While Michelle had a yearning to paint, none of the members would share their talents with her. Instead, she sought out lessons in her hometown. The rest is history. She began teaching in the mid-nineties. In addition, she taught at HOOT in Columbus, DAGSO in Dayton, and our own group last fall. Her main talent is in acrylics, but she is becoming more comfortable in Colored Pencil and Watercolors. She and her husband have been married for 46 years, have two children, and since retiring from Ohio State University, looks forward to spending more time painting, crafting and traveling.

Barbara Riestenberg was born and raised in Hamilton County and is the third of five children in a mostly self-taught creative family. In the early 2000’s, she was introduced to the National Society of Decorative Painters and joined a local chapter which is where her education in art began. At that time there were national and nearby painting conventions where Barb was introduced to many mediums and styles of art. among them watercolors and graphite. She continued to learn, watch, listen, learn, paint and draw. After five years of research and experimenting she developed a way to use coffee as a medium and eventually found a way to teach coffee art. With credit given to fantastic teachers along the way and her drive and determination to develop skills, it gave her the opportunity to continue to learn, experiment and practice and to think outside the box. Her classes are most enjoyable, and everyone learns something new. Continue Barb, we look forward to new adventures. She is teaching two classes at Retreat.

Judy Ribitch: Designer, teacher and exhibitor for 40 plus years, Judy Ribitch started with oils but soon found her way to acrylics at which she excels. A Helping Artist for Deco Art, she has taught several times at NET, HOOT, OKC and GCDA retreat. Welcome to the group, Judy.

Pat Hull, our very own has painted in all mediums, favoring oils and colored pencil excelling at both. Retiring as a former clinical nurse, and Nurse Case Manager, she really started investing a lot of time in oils and now excels in Colored Pencil. She teaches regularly at retreat, GCDA and has taught at HOOT. She is currently the editor of the painting group‘s Newsletter. The former Director of the Oxford Chamber of Commerce and grandmother of four has been very involved in the community volunteering as needed in social groups.

Gini Deaton- an experienced teacher, began painting at age 12. It began with an easel where she painted a picture of her house, her first original and still has it. Gini has taught at retreat many times featuring her skills in oils and painting the past in such a way that uses both celebration of the beauty of what was and clinging to what is only a fleeting memory. She uses light and color to bring us to that same place in time and show us what was meaningful and precious and worth remembering. Before retiring she had a remarkable two-decade career in graphic and web design in the advertising and marketing areas. Today she is thrilled to be focusing more on her first love, working with oils. She likes helping others explore their creativity. Her contribution this year at retreat is “Old World Elegance”, a gorgeous floral lying on a book.

Finally, is Teacher Liaison Stephanie Hauser, a student as well as teacher in the many elements of painting. She is teaching at this year’s retreat an oil and an acrylic, “Spring Hydrangea” and “Snowy Winter Magic”. She is a member of GCDA, DAGSO AND HOOT, and has taught classes as well as taking classes. She is a favorite among the members of our painting group.

Many thanks to the talents of these special ladies who are willing to lead us through it, encourage us and make us believe that we can do this !!! Thanks to you all!!!

Next time we talk about the group of the individuals who all made it happen and the many upcoming events.
Have a great Easter and enjoy the spring weather. Hope it lasts!

GCDA is eagerly anticipating the watercolor seminar by Jude Creager on March 14th! Two modifications were made, not to her class, but to the location within the same facility, and the registration deadline. Please note that her class will be in the school art room rather than the Krumpe Center. Below is a map showing where to park and enter. The other change is the registration deadline from March 7th to the 9th. We look forward to seeing you there!

January 2026 GCDA Newsletter by Jude Creager

We finished the year with our Christmas Party and look forward to the coming months.
And now, let’s talk about retreat. This is one of the activities that GCDA sponsors to invite others into a new experience in the wonderful world of painting.
The retreat classes have been set, and the teachers named. Check out online what classes the painting group has selected.

We are also featuring our retreat teachers this month and in February and March, with their bios and the classes they are teaching. These ladies are experienced and offer a variety of new projects at our April Retreat. (Have you registered yet?)
The retreat brochure can be found at www.gcdapainters.org or www.facbook.com/GreaterCincimnatiDecorativeArtists

We'll start with Maureen Born, a fantastic teacher in whatever medium she “plays” and tends to wander off-key with a bang! She is a painter and a teacher who loves to wander into reality and the abstract. Take it from me. She does this very well Maureen is teaching one of the first retreat classes on Friday, an Acrylic/Mixed Media Shadow Box, and on Sunday, flowers in Acrylic on a round-brim felt tan hat. This one is worth a look-see. A single comma stroke led her on the path as an artist. In her late twenties, she and her mother took a painting class from Mary Jean Niehaus in a small room at the downtown Cappels store. She loved the adventure and later took watercolor classes from Gayle Laible. She taught kindergarten for 25 years and is now volunteering at the Queen City Book Bank. She was trained in OMA (Opening Minds Through Art), working with persons with dementia. In addition to her regular painting with acrylics and watercolor, she has branched her art into pottery and bookmaking. She and Pam Lape were instrumental in holding the first retreat at Miami University. Maureen also designed the GCDA logo.
I don't have enough space here to tell of her kindness and caring for others, and her talents and patience in teaching. Maureen has been married to Gene for 53 years, and is the mother of five and a grandmother of thirteen who are scattered across the US. Maureen is also a good friend to many, and you can always count on her.

Next is Sandie Tieman, who is teaching two classes at Retreat, “Country Charm” and “It Must be Summer”. I met Sandie many years ago when our children were approaching their teens at the Near Sighted Owl, owned by teacher and owner, Gayle Laible. Sandie later bought the business and moved it to Delhi, where she sold art supplies and taught classes. She and I, among others, all took classes from Gayle. Sandie has been a member in good standing with GCDA and has served in many different positions on the board in the planning of classes, seminars, and retreats, and currently holds the office of President. She has been married to Ed for 50-plus years, has two children, and two granddaughters who are involved in dance teams at Seton High School. Sandie is a caring teacher who strives to teach her students in every class everything she knows for a successful outcome. She also designed the GCDA logo.
In June, Sandie Tieman will be teaching a Beginners Class with a fun and easy introductory project for those who would like to experience and learn more about the fun of painting. Introductory classes are one of the projects the GCDA sponsors to help others begin a journey into painting.

Cindy Moser will be teaching “Frosty” at the retreat on Friday night from 6-10pm. This is a watercolor and pen and ink project. She holds a Master of Arts degree and taught high school seniors as a career. Retiring gave her the freedom to work in oil, watercolors, and acrylics. She has taught at many conventions, as well as travel teaching and Zoom classes. She believes that art is hands-on, messy, meditative, and healing, and says it is her therapy. She grew up in the mountains of Tennessee, and when time allows, she hikes in the Smoky Mountains or gardens. She believes you can continue to learn so many art techniques at any age and adapt them to your own style.

Cindy Sayeedi has been painting for 26 years, teaching for 21 of those. She has a degree in interior design, but decided raising her children was more important. She took a class in decorative painting, which started her journey into other mediums, and discovered the versatility of colored pencil! Cindy had the honor of having an ornament she painted accepted into one of the Smithsonian Museum's collections. She was published in the Decorative Painter magazine in 2021, as well as in an upcoming issue of Painting World magazine. For retreat, Cindy is teaching “The Masked Bandit,” a 9x12” colored pencil of a raccoon on Mi-Teintes paper. This class will not disappoint.

And finally, to me, Jude Creager. I have been a member of GCDA since 1980, and as a student of the late Gayle Laible (more on that later), things went from there. I paint every day and teach classes in my home two days a week. A day for me is not good unless I paint. I am teaching two watercolor classes at the retreat, “Yep, it’s Yupo,” (a forest of trees), and “The Thomas Magnolia”, and a short” make-it-take-it! class.

In February and March, we will introduce you to Pat Hull, chair of this year's retreat, Michelle Grindly, Teri Hostetler, Barb Roestember, Stephanie Hauser, Gini Deaton, and Judy Ribitch.

At the March 8, 2026, meeting, you are welcome to paint "UFOs" (unfinished painting projects), Some of the teacher who taught classes might be available to assist.

We celebrated the annual Christmas Party and two of the new officers were installed at that time. I am pleased to announce that Diane Glover was elected as the new Vice President of Programs, and Nancy Vincent will give of her talents as Secretary for the next two years. Two very important jobs for the painting group, one keeping track of all that is said and done, and one making all the arrangements for the monthly painting sessions and seminars. We also held our annual raffle of eight painted boxes painted by members and boy were they spectacular. A good time was had by all who attended

Diane, VP Programs has informed me of the entire teacher selections for the upcoming meetings January through the end of the year. First up, Maureen Born, February, Peggy Hermes, and in March we bring our unfinished projects to finish. There is no meeting in April as we weekend away at Retreat, our special event with classes Friday through Sunday.

In May, Susan Parrett will share her expertise, and June gives us Joann Huerich.
In July we hold our Beginners Class taught by Sandie Tieman. She is a really good teacher and really good with large classes. This class creates an opportunity to introduce decorative painting to guests who are interested in learning “how to” paint a simple acrylic project. The class is free to all “newcomers” and those seeking a new experience..

The August class is taught by Nancy Vincent, September features Diane Glover, October is our service project, and November is Pat Hull. A good line-up for the year with fantastic projects and learning opportunities for all who attend.

There are two seminars this year. Jude Creager in March (yours truly) and Maureen Born in September. These are classes lasting six hours on a selected Saturday and provide an opportunity to learn something new and different. In the past these seminars have been very successful with attendance, and both teachers scheduled have a lot to offer the students. My class is watercolor and an introduction to painting on YUPO paper. Details next month. Maureen will let us know her selection for September.

In the meantime, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all. Be kind to yourself and to others. See you all again right around the corner in 2026!
