Join us as we welcome everyone back to our fourth annual TEDxXavierUniversity event in 2015! Our 2014 theme was Conflict & Violence: An exploration of their causes, prominence, and the unexpected roles they play in our lives. TEDx events involve bringing in speakers who have ideas worth spreading. These speakers can come from a diverse number of fields (technology, entertainment, design, science,

humanities, literature, business, development, and more). The goal is to bring in speakers from within and outside the Xavier community who are emblematic of innovation, service, leadership, and passion. From the TEDx Webpage:

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with many initiatives. At a TED conference, the world's leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes or less. TED speakers have included Roger Ebert, Sheryl Sandberg, Bill Gates, Elizabeth Gilbert, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Brian Greene, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Three major TED events are held each year: The TED Conference takes place every spring in Vancouver, Canada, simultaneous with TEDActive, in Whistler, BC; and the TEDGlobal Conference takes place each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland. On TED.com, talks from TED conferences are shared with the world for free as TED Talks videos. A new TED Talk is posted every weekday. Through the Open Translation Project, TED Talks are subtitled by volunteers worldwide into more than 90 languages. Through our distribution networks, TED Talks are shared on TV, radio, Netflix and many websites. The TEDx initiative grants free licenses to people around the world to organize TED-style events in their communities with TED Talks and live speakers. More than 5,000 TEDx events have been held, and selected talks from these events are also turned into TED Talks videos. The annual TED Prize grants $1 million to an exceptional individual with a wish to change the world. The TED Fellows program helps world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities. TED-Ed creates short video lessons by pairing master teachers with animators, for use in classroom instruction or independent learning.

Dissonance is 10 days away! Meet our third speaker Dr. Thomas Lebesmuehlbacher.

Thomas Lebesmuehlbacher is an Assistant Professor in the Economics Department at Xavier University since 2017. Being a German citizen, Thomas received his B.A. in Economics from Bamberg University in 2008 and completed his M.Sc. in International Economics and Economic Policy at Frankfurt University in 2010. During his undergraduate studies, Thomas spent one year at Clemson University. The connections he formed during this time caused him to pursue a Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Georgia.
His research interests are broad, ranging from Development Economics to Health Economics. The common denominator in all his work is the pursuit of causal relationships, rather than correlations. He has published work on the macroeconomic consequences of remittances, and his research on asylum seekers and house prices was cited in the public press.

It's a beautiful day to meet another TEDxXavier: Dissonance
speaker! Meet Rhea!

Can math be a tool to solve the world’s biggest problems? Rhea Elcock challenges her audience to see mathematics differently from the way it is usually portrayed. Originally from Honolulu Hawaii, Rhea Elcock graduated from Moanalua High School with a love for problem solving. She later transitioned to Xavier University where she received her B.A in Mathematics. At Xavier, she recognized her passion for social justice through programs and organizations such as the Black Student Association, Summer Service Intern and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. While at Xavier, Rhea became a Bruggeman Fellow where she engaged in a yearlong study of how culture plays a role in understanding mathematics. She later spent six weeks in Singapore to further that study. Now seeking to change norm of mathematics and its perspective, Rhea is earning her Masters in STEM Education at the Woodrow Wilson Graduate School with MIT. Passionate about solving problems like racism, sexism and classism, Rhea seeks to use her lense as a mathematician to nurture a better world.
