OUR STORY

Caring Response had its beginnings in France when David Wiltse was participating in a study abroad program. He attended classes with Brother Edwin Joseph, who was studying French in preparation to lead a new development effort among the poor of Madagascar. They became friends and Brother Edwin invited David to work with him in Madagascar the following summer. During the summer of 2000,

David worked with Brother Edwin in the areas of literacy, education, sanitation and hygiene, healthcare and micro-lending. Upon his return to the United States, David shared his stories and pictures with his mother, Virginia Wiltse. Touched by the stories and clear need, Virginia began a correspondence with Brother Edwin. They began to ask questions: What could they do to alleviate the suffering that David had witnessed? What is the responsibility of those who have so much to those who do not even have access to life’s basic necessities?

Your donations are giving hope in the post-Cyclone Gezani darkness for women in our economic Self-Help Group program. The women’s groups, who worked so hard to create small businesses to support their families, lost everything in the cyclone.

Our ONG St. Gabriel partners visited every Self-Help Group, listened to them and asked what they needed to take the first steps towards a new beginning. Funding for their new beginnings has come from YOU.

If you have already donated, thank you! Here is their thank-you video. https://youtu.be/1PamhKQct8Q

We have a long way to go in the rebuilding process in Toamasina.

“And when Jesus beheld the city, he wept over it.” Luke 19:41
And when I watched this video, I wept too.
Women in the rural Toamasina Self-Help Groups worked together saving $2 a week to share their savings. They made loans to one another, and they built small businesses. They lifted themselves from poverty by working together. No handouts, just hard work and determination to make a better life for their families.
Here are their stories in the aftermath of Cyclone Gezani.
Can you watch this video without weeping?
Please help them rebuild. Any amount helps.

“WE STAND HAND IN HAND WITH THE MOST VULNERABLE.”

The motto of CRMF’s ONG St. Gabriel partners has never been more in evidence than since Cyclone Gezani struck Toamasina two weeks ago. To all of you who have donated to the Cyclone Gezani relief effort, THANK YOU!

Here is what your donations are making possible:
“Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you?”
Because you donated to CRMF more than 500 50-kilo sacks of rice, 1,000 liters of cooking oil, and more than 1,000 kilos of beans have already been distributed to feed the hungry and those in need.

“... when did we see you thirsty and give you something to drink?”
With the help of your donations, the damaged water filtration plant built in Ambodisaina was transported down the Pangelene Canal, repaired, and relocated in the city. Because you gave to CRMF, the St. Gabriel team has, almost single-handedly, prevented a cholera outbreak in Toamasina. The team is distributing clean, filtered water throughout the city and has set up four water distribution points so families can access clean water on a daily basis.

“… when did we see you as a stranger and show you hospitality or naked and give you clothing?”
Can there be greater hospitality than putting a roof over the head of a family whose home was struck by the cyclone? Your donations are enabling ONG St. Gabriel to purchase more than 3,000 sheets of corrugated metal roofing to distribute to vulnerable families. Cyclone Gezani took everything but the clothes they were wearing from hundreds of families. The St. Gabriel assessment teams are reaching out to our urban and rural beneficiaries to address their most critical needs.

“… when did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?”
Your donations have made it possible to put a new roof on the Ankirihiry CSB II where, despite extensive damage from the cyclone and the absence of electricity, mothers continue to arrive to have their babies. You have funded medicines for the CSB and for the city hospital. And at the devastated city prison, your donations are providing food and medicine for more than a thousand prisoners.

“Truly I tell you whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine you did for me.” Matthew 25

With our partners in Toamasina, CRMF has started the long process of recovery from Cyclone Gezani, but we still need help. To those who have donated, thank you!
To those who would like to join this humanitarian effort, you can donate securely at the CRMF website: http://caringresponse.org/

“Where there is great love, there are always miracles.” Willa Cather

The Sisters at the Dispensary Antsiramandroso live lives of great love. They provide medical care for hundreds of desperately poor people in remote rural Toamasina. Cyclone Gezani has destroyed all 37 solar panels that enable the dispensary to operate. The laboratory where they perform diagnostic testing is in tatters. The dispensary outbuildings are severely damaged. These Sisters have been our partners since CRMF began its work in 2000.

You can help deliver a miracle to the Sisters at the Dispensary Antsiramandroso. See the photos below.

Please consider a donation to help CRMF and our partners in Toamasina rebuild from the catastrophe of Cyclone Gezani. No gift is too small. Give securely through our website: http://caringresponse.org/

"And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.” (Matthew 10:40–42 NLT)

In the photo below, one-year old Melvini Avellin receives a cup of clean water from her mother Mme. Felicitine Judith as part of the CRMF/ONG St. Gabriel response to the water crisis precipitated by Cyclone Gezani. Other photos show how the distribution of clean water is being facilitated by your generous donations.

The need for assistance remains critical. Please consider a donation though the CRMF website: http://caringresponse.org/

Just back from the 2025 CRMF program outreach to Madagascar. A huge thank-you to the U.S. CRMF team and to our Madagascar partners. St. Teresa of Calcutta urged us to "spread love everywhere you go." You certainly did that in your interactions with the poor of urban and rural Toamasina. You can help! Visit caringresponse.org
