Today we traded iPads for climbing holds! 🧗

We had an awesome time rock climbing at RockQuest with our friends from Clovernook Center for the Blind & Visually Impaired.

Days like this are a great reminder that accessibility is about more than technology. It’s about creating opportunities to try new things, build confidence, and have some fun along the way.

Technology has changed a lot. The need for access hasn’t.

Joey bought an old apple Macintosh PowerBook today, and it was a pretty great reminder of just how far technology has come.

For a student with low vision, technology isn’t just something cool to use. The right device can mean being able to read, learn, create and participate more independently.

That’s a big part of why Vision Nonprofit exists helping make sure students with significant vision loss have access to the technology they need, regardless of whether their family can afford it.
The devices keep changing. The goal stays pretty simple: give kids the tools to see what they can do.

Why iPad?

Because accessibility is built in, it keeps improving, and it can move with a student from school to home.

Features like VoiceOver, Magnifier, and Zoom can support different needs, and software updates can continue adding new accessibility tools over time.

That flexibility is one reason Vision Nonprofit uses iPads as part of the technology we provide to students with significant vision loss.

The right device is not just about the hardware. It is about what it can help a student access.

What comes to mind when you hear the word "blind"?

For many people, it's someone using a white cane or guide dog. While those tools are incredibly important, they aren't part of everyone's journey.

Vision loss isn't one-size-fits-all.

Someone with low vision may use a smartphone, play video games, read large print, or walk independently. Those everyday activities don't tell you how much they can see.

The more we understand, the more inclusive our communities become.

“Guess what? It’s accessible!” 💛

Joey noticed the bright yellow, high contrast stairs and had to celebrate.

We have something else to celebrate too. We just sent out two iPads and have three more committed. That brings us to 18 of our goal of 30 students in 2026.

Our current funds are now fully committed, but there is still plenty of time left this year. If more funding comes in, we can keep going and help even more students.

This year, Vision Nonprofit set a goal of providing essential accessibility technology to 30 students with significant vision loss. So far, we’ve delivered technology to 18 studentsand we’re incredibly proud of that progress.

At this time, all available program funding has been committed, so we’ve temporarily paused new applications while we continue supporting families already in the process.

We’re not finished. Twelve more students stand between us and our 2026 goal. Donations of any size help us move closer to reopening applications and placing this technology into the hands of more students who need it.

The Same iPad. A Very Different Price.

Today, Vision Nonprofit purchased our first 13-inch iPad Pro since recently increased prices.

The exact same device that helps students with significant vision loss now costs $200 more than it did just a short time ago.

At the same time, eight children have already begun the application process.

The need hasn't changed.

Only the cost.

We've also launched Monthly Giving, making it easier than ever to support students with a contribution that fits your budget. No one has to fund an entire iPad alone. Together, small monthly gifts can create life-changing opportunities.

Summer at our house has meant lots of board games.

Joey has been finding his own way to join in, using an optical dome magnifier to read the game cards and keep up with the action.

One of the biggest misconceptions about vision loss is that there’s a single solution.

The reality is that every child accesses information differently. Sometimes it’s magnification. Sometimes it’s large print, Braille, technology, audio, or a combination of tools.

The goal isn’t to use a specific device-it’s to give each child the tools they need to participate, learn, and have fun alongside everyone else.

That’s what accessibility looks like.
Every child deserves the chance to
play, learn, and belong.
