Cincinnati Fire Fighters Union Local 48 represents the brave fire fighters of the Cincinnati Fire Department, the first fully paid professional fire department in the country (April 1, 1853). Local 48 was one of the original charter locals of the International Association of Fire Fighters, receiving our charter on February 28, 1918.

On Wednesday, June 17, the Cincinnati Fire Fighters Union Local 48 laid to rest our Brother, Fire Fighter Ryan Zwick. It was a day filled with honor, respect, and an incredible display of the fire service brotherhood.

The Cincinnati Fire Fighters Union Local 48 would like to extend our sincere gratitude to our neighboring fire departments throughout Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky who stepped up to ensure the citizens of Cincinnati remained protected while hundreds of our members gathered to honor Ryan's life and service.

In times like these, we're reminded that the fire service is more than patches on a sleeve or the name on a truck. It's a network of dedicated men and women who show up when they're needed most, whether that's on an emergency scene or for a fellow Fire Fighter's family.

It is with profound sadness that Cincinnati Fire Fighters Union Local 48 announces the funeral arrangements for our Brother, Fire Fighter Ryan Zwick, who passed away following a courageous battle with occupational cancer. Ryan's death is recognized as an Occupational Cancer Line of Duty Death.

Ryan proudly served the citizens of Cincinnati for 12 years and was assigned to Truck 35 in Westwood. He was a dedicated Fire Fighter, a loyal brother, an uncle, and a respected member of our fire service family whose impact will never be forgotten.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Cincinnati Fire Fighter Ryan Zwick, who courageously battled occupational cancer.

Ryan dedicated his life to serving the citizens of Cincinnati and standing alongside his Brothers and Sisters in the fire service. His strength, professionalism, and commitment to others will not be forgotten.

Today, we ask our members, retirees, families, and community to keep Ryan's loved ones, friends, and fellow fire fighters in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

Occupational cancer remains one of the greatest threats facing the fire service. Ryan's passing is a heartbreaking reminder of the sacrifices fire fighters continue to make long after the fire is out.

Cincinnati Fire Fighters Union Local 48 applauds the Ohio General Assembly for the passage of HB 479, landmark legislation that will provide access to critical Post-Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSI) resources and treatment services for Ohioโ€™s public safety professionals.

Every day, fire fighters, paramedics, police officers, dispatchers, and other first responders are exposed to traumatic events that can leave lasting impacts on their mental health and well-being. This historic legislation, backed by $40 million in funding, represents a major step forward in ensuring those who answer the call for others have access to the care and treatment they deserve.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Ohio Association of Professional Fire Fighters, the Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio, and the many legislators and staff members who worked tirelessly to make this legislation a reality. Their leadership, commitment, and bipartisan collaboration will positively impact first responders and their families for generations to come.

The mental health of our members matters. Seeking help is a sign of strength, and todayโ€™s victory sends a clear message that Ohio stands behind its public safety professionals.

We now look forward to Governor DeWine signing HB 479 into law.

The members of Cincinnati Fire Fighters Union Local 48 are saddened to learn of the passing of retired Cincinnati Fire Chief Richard Braun.

Chief Braun dedicated more than four decades of his life to the fire service and led the Cincinnati Fire Department during a pivotal time in our history. Throughout his tenure, he worked closely with Local 48 on many important issues affecting our members and was a strong advocate for the firefighters and paramedics who serve this city every day.

Chief Braun understood that the strength of the Cincinnati Fire Department lies in its people. He was committed to improving staffing, supporting recruitment efforts, and ensuring the department continued moving forward while honoring the traditions and values that make CFD special.

Many of our members had the privilege of working alongside Chief Braun and witnessed firsthand his passion for the fire service, his leadership, and his dedication to those under his command.

We extend our deepest condolences to Sue, his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched throughout his distinguished career.

Thank you, Chief Braun, for your service, your leadership, and your unwavering support of Cincinnatiโ€™s Fire Fighters.

Itโ€™s been a busy last 24 hours for Cincinnati fire fighters, with our members responding to and working THREE separate 2-alarm fires across the city.

While many are enjoying the holiday weekend with family and friends, our fire fighters continue doing what they always do โ€” answering the call and serving this city.

Weโ€™re proud of the work our members have done over the last 24 hours and thankful that everyone continued to work safely through some very demanding incidents.

As the holiday weekend continues, please celebrate responsibly, stay safe, and take a moment to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day and those who gave everything for our country.
