How do building codes shape the housing we build?

Join ULI Cincinnati, AIA Cincinnati and APA Ohio Chapter-Cincinnati Section on March 17 for a virtual Lunch & Learn exploring how building codes and policy choices influence the development of mid-density housing. The discussion will examine stair and egress requirements—including single-stair restrictions—and how thoughtful code updates could help unlock more attainable housing options like stacked flats, walk-ups, and courtyard apartments.

This fast-paced, 45-minute conversation will connect safety, design, and housing supply while offering practical insight and forward-looking policy perspectives for real estate and planning professionals.

March 17 | 11:45 AM–12:30 PM
Virtual Event

The event will focus on how building code reforms could help expand “missing middle” housing options and improve housing supply.

On October 29, 2025, Kent Friel kicked off the 18th year of the Leader-to-Leader program, which is in partnership with the Cincinnati Public Schools. The program matches a business leader (recruited by the Cincinnatus Association) with a principal, assistant principal or an administrator of the Cincinnati Public Schools.

Kent welcomed principals and business leaders who serve as mentors to the principals in the program– many who have served as mentors for several years. In addition, he gave an overview of the program and the value it brings to developing leadership.

Dr. Alesia Smith, Deputy Superintendent, welcomed the group, and acknowledged the significant impact the program has on CPS principals.

JT Spence, VP Cincinnatus Association, gave a welcome on behalf of Cincinnatus and shared with the group the mission of the Association. In addition, he conveyed Cincinnatus’ commitment to education and the work being done by the Education and Excellence in Government Panels.

Principals, returning to this year’s program, shared best practices used during the mentoring relationship and new principals had the opportunity to spend time with their new mentor.

Rhonda Holyfield-Mangieri encouraged principals and mentors to submit nominations for the 2026 Excellence in Education Awards for the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Region.

The Cincinnatus Association is thankful for Kent Friel’s continued commitment to providing leadership of this program and his passion for education.

"I really feel strongly about the importance of civic organizations at this current time. I hope we can keep Cincinnatus vibrant and involved. A strong community is never built by accident. It grows because people care enough to come together, to share ideas, and to take action. That’s the power of civic organizations.

When we join a civic group, we are saying, I believe in something bigger than myself. We are saying that the challenges our neighborhoods face—whether it’s safety, education, equity, or opportunity—are challenges we can solve together.

A civic organization, like Cincinnatus, gives ordinary citizens an extraordinary voice. They transform concern into action, strangers into neighbors, and communities into forces for change. History shows us that progress doesn’t come from one person alone, but from people organizing, uniting, and working toward a common purpose. So I urge each of you: get involved, stay engaged, and never underestimate the ripple effect of your participation. When citizens organize, communities thrive. And when communities thrive, democracy itself grows stronger."

Delivered by Cincinnatus President, Alice Schneider at the organization's September 9, 2025 membership meeting.
