There’s so much more to a photograph than what we see at first glance. 📸✨

For Jim Parrott, librarian at the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library, a photo of young people participating in a chess tournament captures something bigger: students deeply engaged, families showing up to support them and a community coming together.

Over the years, Jim has seen the West End experience tremendous change, but one thing continues to stand out: its resilience. Through it all, the library has remained a trusted resource and a place for connection, learning and community.

On September 24th, APW founder and award-winning journalist Elissa Yancey is heading to the Taft Research Center, University of Cincinnati for “Pull Yourself Up by Your What Now?”, a free, interactive talk on counter-narratives.

Together, participants will unpack five dominant narratives and begin imagining what belongs in their place.

What stories shape the places we call home? Whose histories are remembered, shared and carried forward? A Picture’s Worth is looking for people passionate about history, storytelling and collaboration to join the Collaborations at the Borderlands Steering Committee.

🍎 Celebrating the people behind Middie Pride 💜 This back-to-school season, we’re looking back at Middie Pride and the voices that helped tell a fuller story of Middletown, Ohio.

Today, we’re highlighting Kimberly Patterson’s story as we recognize the educators and school leaders whose work reaches far beyond the classroom. Their presence, leadership and commitment are part of the fabric of the communities they serve.

Especially in moments when a community finds itself in the spotlight, we believe it’s important to make space for the voices of the people who know it, serve it and call it home.

We’re proud to celebrate Kimberly and all of our Middie Pride storytellers, and we’re excited for Middletown students to begin another year of learning, discovery and possibility. 📚💜

As a new school year begins, we’re continuing to revisit the stories of the people who help make Middletown what it is.

Today, we’re elevating Kee Edwards’ Middie Pride story and celebrating the educators, school leaders and community members who show up for young people throughout Middletown.

At A Picture’s Worth, we believe communities are more than the moments that make headlines. They are shaped by the people, experiences and stories that often exist beyond them. Middie Pride gave Middletown residents the opportunity to tell those stories in their own words.

As students return to classrooms this year, we’re celebrating Kee and all of our Middie Pride storytellers while wishing Middletown’s students and educators a year of learning, growth and connection. 💜

📚 Throwback to Middie Pride 💜

As students and educators head into a new school year, we’re throwing it back to Middie Pride and uplifting the educators and school leaders who help shape their communities every day.

This week feels especially meaningful as Middletown, Ohio, finds itself in the national spotlight. Beyond the headlines are the people who show up for young people each day, helping them learn, grow, find their voices and imagine what’s possible.

One of those voices is Monteen Denise Gates. Through Middie Pride, Monteen shared her story and perspective as part of the larger story of a community defined by the people who call it home.

We celebrate Monteen and all of our Middie Pride storytellers, and we’re wishing Middletown’s students, educators and families a school year filled with learning, connection and possibility. 💜📓

Over 300 guests. One community. One powerful day of connection. ❤️

Antwan’s Stop the Violence Community Event was such a beautiful reminder of what can happen when neighbors, organizations, businesses, and community leaders come together for a shared cause. More than 300 people joined us for a day filled with connection, resources, food, music, activities, and joy. Seeing families enjoying the day alongside leaders and organizations committed to strengthening our communities made the experience even more meaningful.

We’re incredibly grateful to the partners, sponsors, and community leaders who helped bring the day to life, including United Way of Greater Cincinnati, Interact for Health, Southern Grace Eats, Seven Hills Neighborhood Houses - Findlay Street Center, Dante Payne and On Impact Recruiting Services, ROMAC - Robert O'Neal Multicultural Art Center, Cincinnati Public Schools, the City Of Cincinnati Government, including Vice Mayor Jan-Michele Lemon Kearney and Anna Albi for Cincinnati City Council, Cincinnati Police Department, Sanders Development Group LLC and DJ Queen Celine

For Dedriana Hall-Miller, graduation represents far more than earning a diploma. It represents resilience, sacrifice, and a promise to keep moving forward. 🎓❤️

At 25, Dedriana is the proud mother of a three-year-old son who inspires her to become the best version of herself. Everything she is working toward is rooted in creating a better future for him and showing him what determination can make possible.

“My journey is only the beginning, and I’m very excited for the future I’m creating for myself and my son.”

As a second-generation graduate, Dedriana knows the path can be challenging, but this milestone is proof of what can happen when you keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Her story is part of A Picture’s Worth’s Letters to America, sharing reflections on the experiences, people, and hopes shaping our collective future.

For Myrikel Lackey, this photo with her son represents more than a moment together. It represents the future she is working to build. ❤️

As a mother, student, and soon-to-be mom of two, Myrikel is balancing the demands of school and family while pursuing a goal rooted in something bigger than herself: creating stability, opportunity, and a different path forward for her children.

“I want to be the one who changes the patterns for my family by showing my children what education, perseverance, and determination can accomplish.”

Her hope is that her children grow up knowing they are loved, supported, and capable of pursuing their own dreams, no matter what obstacles they encounter. For Myrikel, this is what America looks like: love, purpose, hope, and the determination to build a better future for the next generation.
