Marianist Social Justice Collaborative Unifying and Multiplying the efforts of Lay and Religious Marianists, Marianist institutions, and Marianist communities to act for social justice.

MSJC began in 1998 to educate the Marianist Family about social justice, to help Marianist Family members network around common social justice concerns, and to provide community reflection and support for Marianists to do the work of justice.

Today we give thanks for the life and ministry of Fr. Paul Fitzpatrick, S.M.. Fr. Paul was a volunteer on our Immigrant Justice Team and shortly before his death, he was ministering to ICE detainees being held at the Butler County Correctional Complex. Thank you Fr. Paul for living out your vocation with compassion and for always supporting others in their graced search for God. We will miss you and we will continue your important work of standing with our immigrant brothers and sisters. 🙏♥️

Last night, our Integral Ecology Team hosted a virtual event tied to the Season of Creation theme this year, Living Water. Blair Nelsen of Waterspirit presented to participants on water quality and access, water and energy, and other emerging water issues in our world, and how we can take action. It was an inspiring event.

We invite you to respond to one of our breakout group questions: What is a body of water that is special to you and why?!

Join MSJC’s Women & Justice Team for a virtual “house meeting.” This celebration of St. Phoebe and Venerable Marie Therese de Lamourous will allow us time to remember how their stories exemplify women united in their baptismal call to diakonia—active, radical service. Join us to open your hearts to their witness of persistent courage, pastoral care, and holy leadership.

This intimate gathering will include prayer, learning, and synodal conversation about the ministries of Venerable Marie Thérèse and St. Phoebe, as well as the active question of women’s inclusion within the diaconate today.

Meet Dick Ullrich, the recipient of this year’s Rising Star Award. Dick met the Marianist Brothers and Priests in 1952 when he was a teacher and the first lay Vice Principal at Cardinal Gibbons High School in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

In 1967, Brother Bill Abel, SM, asked him to establish the Office of Justice and Peace for the then New York Province of the Society of Mary. At that time the Office of Justice and Peace primarily advocated by using the Province’s stock holdings to change unjust or harmful corporate practices. Through the sharing of mutual ideas, concerns and social programs of the Lay Communities, the Marianist Sisters, the Cincinnati, St Louis and Pacific provinces of the Society of Mary, together initiated the beginning of the Marianist Social Justice Collaborative in 1998 (MSJC). Dick served as our organization’s very first director!

He then rejoined MSJC in 2024 and has continued to increase his commitment to our justice work. Dick currently attends team meetings for the following Justice Teams: Death Penalty Abolition and Restorative Justice, Immigrant Justice, Integral Ecology, LGBTQ+ Initiative, and Women & Justice. It is Dick’s desire to be involved as much as possible with the work of our organization. He makes a concerted effort to assist with projects across the teams he is involved with, including multiple liturgical events for the LGBTQ+ Initiative. Dick also does a ton of advocacy work on his own time. He uses his ability to work remotely to make our world a more just and welcoming place. Thank you Dick!

Miranda serves professionally as the Program Manager for ACS H.O.P.E. (Health Outreach Program for Equity in
Global Surgery) at the American College of Surgeons, where she leads initiatives to improve surgical care in
medically underserved communities, both domestically and internationally.
At MSJC, Miranda began volunteering as an active member of the Adele Social Justice Project (2021) and is a founding member of MSJC’s Antiracism Task Force (2022), a group dedicated to making MSJC a more
antiracist organization.
Miranda’s work on MSJC’s Antiracism Task Force has been incredibly valuable. She organized a 2024 Lenten Antiracism Program, which was a multi-week
guided reflection and education series using the stages of confession as a pathway to becoming antiracist. Her work over the past year helped MSJC to hire an outside consulting group, Just Roots, to facilitate a race equity
assessment and report of MSJC. She played a big role in taking the assessment report and developing both a document explaining why MSJC is committed to antiracism and an official Race Equity Plan for our organization in the coming years. Miranda’s efforts to get MSJC to deeply consider our call to antiracism, and her understanding of the balance between supporting next
steps and challenging the status quo are unique gifts she shares generously. MSJC would not be nearly as far along in our antiracist work if not for Miranda’s advocacy and commitment.
Miranda lives in the culturally rich Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago with her beloved dog, Rose, and continues to root her professional and personal
life in the work of building equity, community, and hope.

Dayton-area friends: Join this year's Solidarity Walk for Immigrant Justice on Monday, July 14! Hosted by the Bread of Life Family of Parishes, the Spiritus Marianist Lay Community, and the University of Dayton Center for Social Concern, this prayerful public witness invites us to stand with our immigrant and migrant neighbors and recognize immigration as a deeply Catholic issue rooted in human dignity, hospitality, and justice. The walk begins at Holy Angels Parish and concludes with opportunities to learn about local organizations and ways to get involved.

All are welcome! Come walk, pray, and stand in solidarity.
