Alms Park Advisory Council dba Alms Park Allies is a registered 501c3 organization dedicated to the restoration, beautification and activation of Alms Park.

To that end, we recruit volunteers, organize work events, host cultural events, and raise funds. We are focused on beautifying Alms Park and working with volunteer groups to remove invasive species from the forest to support the repopulation of native wildflowers, trees and shrubs. We host several clean ups annually in support of this cause, working in collaboration with the Cincinnati Board of Parks and the Ohio River Foundation. Additionally, we host two music and entertainment events at the park each year, featuring live music, food trucks, and games. Our events draw 300 people on average, and we garner the support of more than 200 volunteers annually.

Exactly how many Belles of Tusculum were there?

Tusculum, of course, is the verdant hilltop overlooking the old town of Columbia in the eastern reaches of Cincinnati. At least two women acquired the title of “Belle of Tusculum” and it’s possible that a third beauty lurks in the annals of time. https://ow.ly/oHtk50ZkIuM

Way atop Mount Tusculum, there are some streets that remind us this marvelous hill was once a vineyard. The streets named Chardonnay Ridge, Riesling Knoll, and Catawba Valley are fairly redolent of the vine. Curiously, those obvious streets may have less connection to that old vineyard than three nearby streets, namely Delaware Ridge, Creveling and Elsinboro, and therein lies a tale.

The prominence we know today as Mount Tusculum was once known, according to the 1943 WPA-published Guide to Cincinnati, as Bald Hill, supposedly because “the Indians had cleared away the trees in order to spy on the invading white men.” This is absolute bunkum, baloney and claptrap. If the Native Americans wanted to spy on the settlers downhill in Columbia, they would have kept the trees in place so they wouldn’t be seen, right? Additionally, the settlers were just blaming the Shawnee for their own deforestation. With lumber needed for housing and fuel, the white folks timbered all of Cincinnati’s hills within a few decades. https://ow.ly/xEur50ZifGP

This just in... Cincinnati remains top 10 for parks in the nation for the 11th straight year! The annual ranking by Trust for Public Land uses lots of data sets to evaluate the largest 100 US cities for the quality and availability of public park spaces. Their analysis found that 91% of our residents live within a 10-minute walk of a public greenspace. And how about this? They found that 17.1% (8,397 acres) of Cincinnati’s total area are parklands.
