The NAACP will launch a legal hub October 24 to investigate voter intimidation and suppression claims amid concerns about President Donald Trump’s efforts to change election rules. NAACP General Counsel Kristen Clarke said attorneys will review reports and pursue legal action to protect eligible voters. The effort follows a Supreme Court ruling weakening Voting Rights Act protections, raising concerns about redistricting practices affecting majority-Black congressional districts and fair electoral representation nationwide.

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” Archbishop Desmond Tutu used those words to challenge the idea that people can remain completely detached when one group holds far more power than another.

Tutu illustrated his point with a simple image: an elephant standing on the tail of a mouse. If someone claims neutrality while the mouse remains trapped, he argued, that neutrality does nothing to change what is happening to the weaker party.

His words came from a life shaped by South Africa’s struggle against apartheid. Tutu became one of the country’s most recognizable voices against a system that legally separated people by race and denied South Africa’s Black majority basic political and social rights.

Rather than limiting his work to the church, Tutu spoke publicly against apartheid, supported international pressure on South Africa and repeatedly called attention to the experiences of people living under racial oppression. His activism earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.

After apartheid ended, Tutu continued confronting difficult questions about justice and accountability. He chaired South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, where victims described abuses committed during the apartheid era and the country wrestled publicly with its past.

His famous elephant-and-mouse comparison remains widely shared because its message reaches beyond one historical period. Tutu was arguing that silence has consequences when power is unequal. For him, recognizing injustice meant deciding what responsibility people have when they see someone else being harmed.
