Making a difference? That’s at the core of Civil Air Patrol. 💪 We engage in major missions to be impactful, but sometimes the smallest details make the biggest difference.

A big shoutout to Capt. David F. Pinella and Maj. Keating for welcoming a brand-new KY050 cadet on his 13th birthday by showing him and his family around N188CP. ✈️ He was so enthusiastic that he didn’t want to wait for an orientation ride—he wanted to see a CAP airplane ASAP! These moments can truly change a young person’s life.

During the weekend of mid-February, Kentucky and the surrounding areas experienced unfortunate flooding. In response, our 73rd Senior Squadron quickly mobilized its members to conduct search and rescue missions.

Our team contributed to over 16 sorties—16 missions targeting various locations across the state of Kentucky. This effort totaled 32.8 flight hours with our Civil Air Patrol planes, resulting in over many hundred of images taken of different targets.

A big shoutout and heartfelt thanks to the members who stepped up and dedicated long hours to the missions. You delivered on our promise:

Volunteers serving America’s communities, saving lives, and shaping futures.

What breathtaking views and perfect weather to be in the skies! N99566 (Cessna 172) was busy this weekend as 2nd Lt. Claudia Rébola renewed her Mission Scanner qualification with Lt. Col. George Stinson. One of the most wonderful aspects of the Civil Air Patrol is the continuous investment in learning and readiness. Our 73rd Sr Squadron Members do an excellent job maintaining currency and proficiency, volunteering their time to ensure our squadron remains ready and capable of responding to mission needs. Who’s next for breathtaking views?

KY073 recently hosted an in person Level 2 class with VOLU instructor 1st Lt Huntington at the helm. This resulted in 6 Level 2 Part 1 completions, with the majority of Part 2 completions pending a technician rating in a speciality track. In turn this also culminated in the promotions of Paul Sian and Paul Perkins to 2nd Lt, and Keilah Gill to Flight Officer!

Congratulations to all! Impressive efforts, showcasing our commitment to our members and the organization, with engament and continued growth, preparing future CAP leaders.

What do we do at Civil Air Patrol Squadron 073 meetings during the first and third weeks of each month? In addition to safety training, we explore a variety of topics. This week, Capt. David F. Pinella, CAP, KYWG DOU, gave a fantastic presentation on the remarkable aerodynamic properties of one of his favorite planes at the National Museum of the US Air Force: the Fokker D.VII. What a treat for our members!

Was KY073 holding a recruitment event? OH NO! We proudly took an opportunity to host our families to a meeting. Thanked them with a meal, introduced them to our team, shared how we serve, and showed them around our aircraft. We are thankful to them for sharing us with our community! #073

Currency and proficiency aren’t the same thing. The FAA sets minimum standards for currency—which has a lot to do with staying legal, but not much to do with being a competent pilot. Bottom line? Flying is not “just like riding a bicycle.” Individual needs vary, but for the vast majority of us, meeting FAA requirements (and nothing more) is simply not enough. The obvious solution to the proficiency problem is to do more flying. But when it comes to proficiency—being prepared to handle any situation with which you might reasonably be presented—quality beats quantity. The Civil Air Patrol and 073 are dedicated to providing quality service to our communities. While 1st Lt Bryan Savage is maintaining instrument proficiency, Safety Pilot 2nd Lt Claudia Rebola maintains constant visual control of the aircraft for safety reasons, and enjoying the amazing views that Bryan is missing out on.

073 Crews were participating in the SAR-EX Azure Fescue this weekend. Using skills gained in training to support our Emegency Services mission. Many supporting roles came to serve in ELT searches, Areal Photography, staffing mission base and conducting ground operation’s.

The flights 073 conducted made for a tired aircrew. And With two planes out of KLUK and one from KLOU to pick up a crew it was a full weekend.

Member Profile: 2nd Lieutenant Claudia B. Rebola has been a member of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) for over 3 years. 2nd Lt Rebola is a designer as well as the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs at the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning at the University of Cincinnati!
Claudia joined CAP because she believes services is a core value in her life.
