Rest in peace, firefighter Zwick. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ryan’s friends and family and our Cincinnati Fire Fighters Union Local 48 brothers and sisters during this difficult time.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Cincinnati Fire Fighter Ryan Zwick, who courageously battled occupational cancer.

Ryan dedicated his life to serving the citizens of Cincinnati and standing alongside his Brothers and Sisters in the fire service. His strength, professionalism, and commitment to others will not be forgotten.

Today, we ask our members, retirees, families, and community to keep Ryan's loved ones, friends, and fellow fire fighters in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

Occupational cancer remains one of the greatest threats facing the fire service. Ryan's passing is a heartbreaking reminder of the sacrifices fire fighters continue to make long after the fire is out.
Rest easy, Brother Zwick. We have the watch from here.

Funeral and memorial service information will be shared as it becomes available.

At 09:18 today units from Green Township Fire & EMS were dispatched to the 6700 block of Harrison Avenue for a fire alarm activation. While responding, units were advised that the whole apartment building was full of smoke, so the incident was upgraded to a building fire response. Engine 53 arrived, located a working fire in a second floor apartment and performed an aggressive interior attack, declaring the fire under control at 09:33. Thanks to our mutual aid partners from Miami Township Fire & EMS, Cheviot Fire Department, Whitewater Township Fire Department, and Colerain Township Fire Department for the assistance. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters; however, one dog died as a result of the smoke from the fire. The cause is under investigation, but is not considered suspicious.

As we encounter this epic snowfall and the associated cold, we've brought in some additional manpower to make sure we can cover all of our bases. Here are a few things you can do to help us in the event we need to help you.

First - try to avoid our presence by NEVER using an extension cord to supply a space heater. Space heaters need to plug directly into a wall outlet.

Next - check the batteries in your smoke detector, and confirm your carbon monoxide detector is working.

Lastly, as time allows please consider clearing paths around fire hydrants, as well as a path to your elderly / sick neighbor who may need our services.

Students - community service hours will be awarded for clearing snow from hydrants or for paths to the homes of your elderly / sick neighbors. One (1) hour for every two (2) hydrants or One (1) hour for each path you clear to a home. Stop by any of our 4 firehouses to get a form completed and signed by one of our firefighters. Our neighbors in surrounding communities qualify as well!

Thanks in advance!
