Chipping Away at Parkinson’s is a wiffle ball golf tournament organized and operated by Team Brandonmore, a small group of neighbors dedicated to having fun while raising money to help cure Parkinson’s disease. Proceeds from the event are donated to the Gardner Family Center for Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders at the University of Cincinnati Neuroscience Institute (www.ucgardnercenter.c
om). The Team and tournament was created in 2012 after learning about four families in the Brandomore neighborhood, located just east of Cincinnati, Ohio, directly touched by Parkinson's, a degenerative neurological disorder affecting five million people worldwide. “Our neighborhood is full of close friends and family so we felt we needed to do something to help” said Paul Lake, team co-founder. “Wiffle ball golf has been a quick, easy, and inexpensive game played by my family and friends for years so we decided to make a fundraising event around it” he continued. What started as a party for a few neighbors on an improvised course across two backyards (2 1/2 acres ) quickly grew to hundreds of participants with raffle prizes, winner trophies, a cook-out dinner and live music. Most importantly, the tournament has raised more than $160,000 through 6 events. “Raising so much money in just six neighborhood outings is an amazing accomplishment for a truly grass-roots event” said co-founder Bob Dames. “The tournament has exploded into a regional event.”
Through the years we had the support of several local businesses and donors; Flipdaddy’s Burgers and Beer, Braxton Brewery, Coca-Cola, The Cincinnati Reds, Delta Airlines, and many others. “We have been truly blessed to have fantastic sponsors” Dames said. “Any help supports a wonderful neighborhood event, but will also help lead to a cure for Parkinson’s!”
