It is with great sadness that we share the news of Frank Herrmann’s passing on August 30, 2026.

Frank was a beloved artist, painter, and educator whose influence reached far beyond his own studio. As Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), Frank dedicated more than 40 years to teaching, mentoring, and inspiring generations of artists.

We were fortunate to work with Frank on many projects throughout the years, including most recently a mural installed on his studio building in Northside, led by his former student, artist Mark Hanavan, and to be formally dedicated on October, 16, 2026. The project is a beautiful reflection of Frank’s lasting influence as an educator and artist, and the many connections he fostered throughout Cincinnati’s creative community.

We are grateful for the many years Frank shared his work, knowledge, and spirit of collaboration with those around him. His work will continue to inspire, and his legacy will live on through the countless artists whose lives he touched.

Frank will be deeply missed.

1001 Colors began with a belief that creativity could open doors for young people and strengthen neighborhoods. But how does one mayor’s idea, born at Harvard University, become a catalyst for change and a lasting movement across Cincinnati?

Watch as former Cincinnati Mayors Roxanne Qualls and Mark Mallory, along with Mayor Aftab Pureval, reflect on our organization’s origins, its expansion into a citywide mural program, and the responsibility of carrying its vision forward.

Walls aren’t the only things we paint! We spotted an ArtCar from one of our past projects in the wild, and 16 years later it’s still holding up wonderfully. In 2010, we transformed 24+ cars, trucks, and vans into mobile masterpieces.

1001 Colors is accepting applications for the first Gallery Fellowship of the 2027 Season!

“All That We Carry” is a mixed media and collage-making Fellowship led by Artist-in-Residence Cathy Bernardino Bailey, inviting artists ages 16–24 to transform everyday discarded materials into patchworks of color, texture, and imagination that tell stories of lived experiences.

Fellows will receive mentorship from Cathy, collaborate with peers, and gain hands-on experience creating, installing, and presenting work in a professional gallery setting.
