Transgender people face significantly higher risks of violence while incarcerated. National data shows that more than 1 in 3 transgender people in prisons and jails report sexual assault, a rate dramatically higher than the general population. Each June, we celebrate Pride Month by lifting up stories of strength, advocacy, and leadership within the LGBTQ+ community and beyond. At the Ohio Justice & Policy Center, that includes honoring our founder, civil rights attorney Al Gerhardstein, whose work on the landmark Supreme Court case Obergefell v. Hodges secured marriage equality nationwide. That case is one of many ways Al’s decades-long fight for dignity and justice has shaped the world we live in and laid the foundation for the work we continue today. Al founded OJPC in 1997 with a bold vision: a legal team rooted in community, committed to systemic change, and determined to serve people who have long been pushed to the margins. He built our foundation of client-centered advocacy that challenged Ohio’s carceral systems and created pathways for healing, restoration, and opportunity. Al didn’t shy away from hard fights. He showed us that the law can be a tool for liberation when it’s wielded with purpose, compassion, and courage.

Regardless of their past, every person incarcerated in Ohio’s prisons deserves dignity and human rights. This includes access to adequate medical care, freedom from excessive force by prison staff, the right to practice one’s religion, and fair treatment for LGBT prisoners.

AAPI people are systematically erased from criminal justice discourse and data, despite being impacted by the system. Prison data is often one of the only sources of insight the general public has when a group of people is underrepresented in reporting their needs, and their care can be overlooked. | Source: https://repository.law.umich.edu/mjrl/vol26/iss2/5/

In Ohio prisons, individuals with mental illness are still subjected to solitary confinement, often with limited access to care. Research and legal findings have long shown that this practice can worsen psychiatric symptoms and increase harm. One federal court likened it to putting “an asthmatic in a place with little air to breathe.” A humane system would recognize that punitive isolation is incompatible with mental health care. | Source: https://www.acluohio.org/shining-light-solitary-confinement/solitary-confinement-ohio/
