Safe Families of Southwest Ohio

Safe Families of Southwest Ohio Safe Families for Children is a nonprofit, volunteer movement that surrounds families in crisis with caring, compassionate community.

Safe Families for Children (SFFC) is a national movement of compassion that gives hope to families in crisis. Safe, loving homes are provided where parents may voluntarily have their children cared for while parents seek to restore stability in their live

Mission
The Safe Families for Children Movement strives to meet three objectives:

1. Child Welfare Deflection: SFFC provides a safe alternativ

e with the goal of preventing the need for child welfare custody, thus significantly reducing the number of children entering the child welfare system.

2. Child Abuse Prevention: Providing an overwhelmed and resource limited parent with a safe, temporary place for their child without threat of losing custody can avert potential abuse/neglect episodes.

3. Family Support and Stabilization: Many parents struggle because of limited informal social supports and unavailable extended family. Many SFFC host families become the extended-family that a parent never had.

The posture of pausing, noticing, and seeing a person is the heart of biblical hospitality. This is a radical way of practicing hospitality!

Let's think about practicing hospitality in two ways. First, to share with those “who are in need.” Since we ALL have needs, every encounter is an opportunity to notice others' needs, NOT to think about yourself.

Second, practice hospitality. This skill isn't reserved for individuals who excel at entertaining, but a Christ-like posture that can be learned over time as we start to pause, notice, and see people around us.

Family preservation refers to the ways we can keep families together and help them thrive. By providing family-focused PREVENTION services for families facing crisis, the goal is to improve parenting and family functioning, keep children safely at home, and prevent unnecessary involvement in foster care.

Prevention services emphasize building on a family's existing strengths while addressing underlying issues such as poverty, lack of access to basic resources, or dealing with challenging situations such as homelessness, unemployment, and a lack of child care. The overarching aim is to prevent the trauma of separation and promote long-term family stability and independence.

Our evidence-based and Family First-approved model is keeping families together! Check out our newly released Annual Report at https://bit.ly/3QjumAM to read more about how we are impacting families nationally and globally!

Family Preservation starts with community. When parents feel overwhelmed and isolated, a circle of support can make all the difference. The goal is to support parents by showing up and offering community before a crisis becomes a breaking point.

No family should have to face a crisis alone! Let’s be the community every family should have.

The Safe Families for Children (SFFC) movement is made up of thousands of amazing volunteers who step forward to open their hearts and homes to walk alongside families facing crisis. What they do is no small feat!

Meet Brad and Elizabeth, who saw God's calling to impact every aspect of their life as a Host Family, Ministry Lead, and Financial Partner with SFFC.

"We acknowledge our level of engagement is a bit unique! But we couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity it’s provided for us to see the beauty and power of God on display, for all the ways this has spiritually transformed our family, and the joy we’ve experienced as a result of being more deeply connected with Safe Families for Children and the many people tied to it."

It is because of their commitment to live out radical hospitality, disruptive generosity, and intentional compassion that helps change lives and transform communities.

Check out our newly published 2025 Annual Report that shares how God is growing the SFFC movement to serve and support more children and families.

June is recognized as National Family Preservation Month with a focus on keeping families safely together.

It highlights the importance of reducing child removals, strengthening family bonds, supporting parents, and providing resources to prevent unnecessary family separation.

Key aspects of National Family Preservation Month include:

1. Focus on Family Preservation: Celebrating the efforts to keep children with their biological families, recognizing the critical work of child welfare professionals.

2. Preventing Separation: Emphasizing that, whenever safely possible, children should remain with their families to avoid the trauma of separation.

3. Support Systems: Highlighting the need for community support, resources, and services that help families thrive and stay together.

4. Awareness and Advocacy: Using the month to raise awareness about the challenges faced by families in the child welfare system.

This observance promotes a shift toward strengthening families to prevent family instability rather than react to it.

Stabilizing a family facing crisis and unmanageable circumstances is about reducing immediate stress, building relationships, and strengthening the family unit. It’s not about changing everything but creating enough stability and space so they can find their footing again as a family and move forward TOGETHER.

It is about standing in the gap and providing a network of resources and relationships so families can get back on their feet and thrive!

Too often, parents in a crisis situation face an impossible choice: struggle alone or risk losing their children to foster care. But what if these families had a Circle of Support offering hope, stability, and belonging before a crisis becomes family separation?

That's exactly what we do. We bring churches and communities together to provide support and meaningful relationships, helping families stabilize their situation and get back on their feet. This prevents the need for foster care and keeps families together!

Let's unite to ensure our children are safe and parents supported.💙

Did you know May is National Foster Care Month?

When people hear about Safe Families for Children, they often quickly compare it to Foster Care. There is a big difference: our emphasis is placed on PREVENTION, NOT INTERVENTION. We believe that when parents are properly supported, more children can stay together, and fewer families are separated.

At Safe Families, we think it's important to recognize the differences as we strive to focus on foster care prevention. Over the next few weeks, we'll outline some of those differences, but in the meantime, take a look at a snapshot of the differences below!
