When mothers speak honestly about their experiences, real understanding begins.

Thank you to the women who shared their stories with us during the Mama We See Project. 🤍
We’re just getting started.

Dr. King didn’t call us to comfort.
He called us to conscience.

In times of uncertainty, division, and fear, his words still steady us:

“The time is always right to do what is right.”

Justice is not seasonal.
Equality is not partisan.
Peace is not passive.

Today, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by choosing courage over apathy, truth over silence, and love that demands action. May we be the kind of people who carry the dream forward, especially when it feels hardest to do so.

Black women are 3.5 times more likely to die during childbirth than any other race. This stark reality is often linked to the lack of BIPOC providers, resulting in patients being dismissed, silenced, or ignored. Dr. Janell Green Smith dedicated her career to advocating for her patients, particularly Black mothers, and fighting to eliminate the fear and disparities they face. Tragically, she fell victim to the very issue she worked tirelessly to address, leaving behind a legacy that we must honor and continue to push forward. She should be alive today.

Motherhood is often the first place we encounter unconditional love. A mother’s embrace is where life begins… not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. Her love provides safety, warmth, and belonging before we even know how to name it.

To say all love “ends there” acknowledges that even as we grow, change, and build our own lives, the foundation of a mother’s love is always present. It shapes how we learn to love others, and in many ways, it remains the final comfort, the love we return to in memory, gratitude, or presence.

You can eat all the right foods, take every vitamin, go to every appointment… and still feel uncertain. Will my baby be okay? Will I be heard if something doesn’t feel right?

At Edith Institute, we know that for Black patients, these uncertainties are often magnified by medical bias and communication gaps. That’s why we’re here to build bridges between patients and providers and to restore what should have never been lost: trust, clarity, and care.

Pregnancy isn’t just physical, it’s emotional, cultural, and deeply personal. Your questions, fears, and instincts deserve to be met with respect. Your voice should be central… not sidelined.

Let’s mend the conversation. Let’s change the experience.

Today, we pause, not to celebrate, but to reflect.

At Edith Institute, our mission is rooted in dignity, equity, and justice for Black mothers. And on a day meant to mark independence in this country, we sit with the truth: freedom has never been fully realized for everyone. Not in 1776. Not now.

This year, that truth weighs heavier than ever.

The “Big Beautiful Bill” has passed threatening the healthcare of millions, including pregnant women and children. Immigrants are being detained without due process. Rights are being rolled back, and Black mothers are still forced to fight to be seen, heard, and cared for in systems designed to overlook them.

This country is hurting. And so are the people in it.

So today, we don’t post flags.
We mourn.
We recommit to the work.
We amplify the voices.
We grieve what’s been lost.
And we continue building the future our ancestors dreamed of… where liberation is not selective, where care is a right, and where no mother is left behind.

Independence is not a finished story.
We’re still writing it, with courage, resistance, and unshakable love for our communities.

Juneteenth is more than a historical date, it’s a mirror reflecting the work still left to do.

We celebrate, but we also organize. We honor, but we also interrogate. Because liberation isn’t real if it doesn’t reach our healthcare systems, our birthing rooms, and our policies.

This Juneteenth, we ask:
❗Who still isn’t free?
❗What truths are still being delayed?

Happy Father’s Day from Edith Institute

Today, we honor the fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, and father-figures who stand in love, strength, and steady support… especially for the mothers and families we serve.

To the Black fathers who show up with tenderness, protect with wisdom, and nurture with grace, you are seen. Your presence is powerful. Your love is legacy-building.

At Edith Institute, we celebrate the quiet sacrifices and the loud laughter. The diaper changes, the bedtime stories, the prayers, the pep talks, and the protection.

Thank you for being anchors in the storm and light on the path.

Happy Father’s Day. We honor you. 💛

❤️ This. A thousand times this. Motherhood isn’t something you do. It’s something you become. Sending love to all the mamas out there who understand this deep, unwavering connection. You are not alone.

Too often, Black mothers are expected to make medical decisions without clear information, without time to process, and without emotional support.

That’s not just frustrating; it can also be dangerous.

We created the Maternal Health Decision-Making Flowchart to help Black mothers feel empowered during their pregnancy journey.

This tool is designed to help you slow down and ask the right questions when you’re in the exam room:

🗣️ “Can you explain that in a different way?”
🧠 “What are the risks for someone like me?”
⏳ “Do I have time to think about this?”
🤝 “Can I bring in someone else to help me decide?”

Whether you’re feeling confused, unheard, or just overwhelmed, this flowchart is a reminder:
You are not alone, and your voice matters.

Save this. Share it. Use it at your next appointment.

Because every Black mother deserves care that honors her body, her choices, and her experience.
