We were very fortunate to welcome Hong-Sheng Wang, PhD from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine's Department of Pharmacology, Physiology and Neurobiology to the Hub! We discussed the health impacts of plastics, his work researching plastic exposure, and the inspiring work the Hub is doing. We are thankful that Dr. Wang will continue to advise and educate our team and the Hub community! Our Lithium Battery Drop-off Program has expanded to 16 fire stations thanks to Colerain Township and Colerain Fire! They have just added their second station — Station #102 at 3955 Generation Drive. This program, which is free for residents thanks to support from Rumpke Waste & Recycling, is now spread across Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky and has safely handled thousands of pounds of lithium batteries — keeping workers safe and hazardous material out of the landfill. 🔥 Our efforts are expanding! Colerain Fire is adding a SECOND drop off location for the Fire Department Lithium Battery Collection program here in Colerain Township!

🔋DYK - since the program launched in 2023, more than 4,160 pounds of lithium batteries have been recovered? It's true!

♻ Even better - more than 1,300 pounds of this have been collected by Colerain Township's drop-off location at Station 25. That's more than 30 percent of all lithium batteries recovered and recycled through this program!!

The Colerain Township Dept. of Fire and EMS is proudly working with the and to reduce fire hazards and keep lithium-ion batteries out of the landfill.

Recycling these batteries doesn't just reduce fire hazards, but it's also better for our environment and safer for sanitation workers who would otherwise be handling damaged lithium-ion batteries.

Drop off your used lithium batteries safely at either of our TWO LOCATIONS:

This month's volunteer spotlight: Hannah Barker!

Hannah has been volunteering at the Hub since 2021! She enjoys volunteering because it makes her hopeful that an inspired and engaged community can make a difference. We make quite the impact together! We couldn't do it without you, Hannah!

You can almost always find Hannah carrying a book! She avoids bringing her reading material to the Hub because she doesn't want it to end up in the Flexible Film bin!

Hannah has always been drawn to sustainability. She is someone who loves spending time outside and in the woods, and she is willing to do her part to protect our natural environment. Thank you for being an invaluable part of our volunteer community!

It was great to host Kate Kozak from The Ohio State University this week! Kate is a Cincinnati native, a graduate of Wyoming City Schools, and past Mill Creek Alliance and Green Umbrella fellow. She is now a senior at the School of Environment and Natural Resources at The Ohio State University and is a member of their Zero Waste team.

As part of that team, Kate is working to establish capabilities to accept hard-to-recycle materials on campus, using the Hub as a model. Thank you, Kate, for your dedication to creating a more sustainable future! ♻️ 🌎️

Bee Jones has joined the Hub team! Bee is our new General Waste Stream Coordinator and part of the team that manages our plastics, textiles, styrofoam, and more. Prior to the Hub, Bee worked in a repair/reuse capacity at REI and was a part of their Green Team — participating in waste-reduction & cleanup efforts, and in advocacy work for local nonprofits including Adventure Crew and Tri-State Trails. Bee is also working towards a degree in Environmental Engineering and Sustainability at Cincinnati State Community and Technical College. Welcome Bee!

We're so glad to have The Pickle Lodge as a corporate customer! No need to throw away used pickleballs — we can recycle them! Thanks to Joe Frank and the whole crew for diverting waste from the landfill!
