Lead. Lift. Inspire. 💚 In loving memory of Melissa Hortman.
Girl Scout. Minnesota House Speaker. Lifelong Champion for Girls.

We are heartbroken by the loss of a beloved leader, trailblazer, and forever Girl Scout.

Melissa Hortman was more than a policymaker—she was a protector of possibility. She carried the spirit of Girl Scouts with her in every role she held, leading with grace, clarity, and an unshakable belief in the power of girls.

She began her journey in a troop, just like so many of the girls we serve today. And from that foundation, she rose to break barriers, speak truth, and open doors that had long been closed to others. She never stopped believing in girls—and she never stopped showing up for them.

Her legacy isn’t just in laws passed or titles earned. It’s in the quiet confidence she gave a young girl who didn’t yet see herself as a leader. It’s in the spark she lit in others to speak up, to take action, to lead with love.

At Girl Scouts River Valleys, we had the privilege of witnessing that legacy in motion. Melissa was always there—for our mission, our movement, and most importantly, our girls.

As we hold her memory close, we also hold the torch she passed to us.

If Melissa touched your life—or if her story stirs something in your heart—we invite you to be part of the world she worked so hard to create. One where girls are heard. Lifted. Loved. And ready to lead.

Because when one girl is empowered, a ripple begins. And Melissa knew exactly how powerful that ripple could be.

She was—and always will be—a . We will carry her light forward in every troop meeting, every badge earned, and every brave voice that rises.

Happy World Thinking Day!
Did you know that we have Girl Scout and Girl Guide sisters all over the world? As a Girl Scout, you are a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS for short) and you show that via the World Trefoil Pin on your Insignia tab. World Thinking Day is a great reason to learn about our sisters around the world and their cultures.
Students at BGSU put together some virtual presentations that might be fun for you to check out, here: https://padlet.com/spallingerk/esol-1010-spring-2023-world-thinking-day-digital-exhibits-ed63kzbyom2mofgw?fbclid=IwAR1Ap02eo00MFDVRMMdTCNlQyX9l6HrfKJMU1Zc5-lonW_aCh6B6MbMCkuY

Some hot tips on registering for camp from our sister SU!

🏕 Summer Camp registration starts tomorrow for Day Camp, at Camp Butterworth

Here are some pro-tips!

1) Log into mygs NOW to make sure you won't have trouble logging in tomorrow. Go to www.gswo.org and click on "mygs."

2) Check your girl's grade in the system. Her current grade drives what camp programs you can sign her up for. When you are logged in to mygs, click on "My Household." Next to your girl, click the edit icon, scroll to the identification section, and peep that grade level. Girls are supposed to age up on their own each year, but girls who add to a troop mid-year sometimes don't age up correctly... So be sure to check!

3) If you need help logging in or updating her grade level, call customer care. 513-489-1025

4) When you go to register for camp, using the search function, search the zipcode for the camp you want (45039 for Camp Butterworth).

5) Register for one session/girl at a time. The system does not love processing multiple. This is purely my opinion based on my experience with Day camp... Brownie sessions fill the fastest, followed by Daisy and Junior. Cadette sessions tend to fill slower. There is also PA training for Cadettes (must have earned the Leader In Action award, first), the opportunity for Cadettes to be a Program Assistant (if they have attended PA training), and the opportunity for CIT training for Seniors/Ambassadors.

6) If the session your girl wants is full by the time you get to it, don't lose hope! Get added to the wait list ASAP. A lot of people on wait lists still get in as capacities change once demand is identified and as people schedule their summers - GSWO really tries to get every girl who wants to go to camp, at camp. Here's the waitlist link: https://form.jotform.com/223344865990163

7) If you need help, Customer Care will be available! Call 513-489-1025 or email [email protected]. They open early at 6:00am tomorrow, only, for camp registration.

8) Be prepared - the deposit went up to $75 this year. Have your payment method ready and DO NOT use auto-fill to load your credit card number - it will not work. You can check the box to request financial aid and you can apply digital dough to your balance, but you will have to pay this $75 deposit now.

Cookies, campfires, and bracelets are all part of the journey, but changing the world? That’s the real destination! One adventure at a time, Girl Scouts learn, grow, and do amazing things. Unleash your inner leader.

HEY HEY GIRL SCOUTS!!

Quick reminder that we have our Bridging Ceremony and End-of-Year Party TONIGHT

🎉 at Yellowwood Shelter
at Sharon Woods from 6:30-8:30 🎉

Looks like it may be wet, but no threat of electrical activity as far as I've seen. So DRESS FOR THE WEATHER as the Girl Scouts motto states, "Be Prepared." And we believe there is no "bad weather," simply inadequate gear.

Speaking of gear, we'll review tonight what the scouts going to Camp in June will receive from Council and what else to pack. We'll chat about carpooling to camp and give some updates on where we are in planning for our August TRIP TO COLUMBUS!!

Can't wait to celebrate an excellent year of Scouting with you and your amazing girls tonight!
