Shrimp takes on Homegoods!

The goal of this session was for Shrimp to work on focusing on his handler in a more confining and busy environment, and, boy, did they find that! The store was very busy shoppers, new sights, and strange smells. Focusing the whole time was very hardnfor Shrimp's puppy brain, but even when he struggled, he made good choices. After spotting himself in a mirror, he struggled to refocus. His training team brainstormed and implemented a few small adjustments that will be made in their practice at home. This will make his next public outing session smoother for everyone!

For years, CCAA has offered educational classes surrounding three types of working dogs: service dogs, therapy dogs; and emotional support animals (ESAs). This week, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) distributed a memo to leadership that the Department would exclude emotional support animals and more strictly police the definition of a qualified service animal when granting accommodations for disabled tenants effective immediately.

If you have a psychiatric service dog, this does not impact you. Your dog is trained to complete a task for you. If you have an ESA, you will likely see and feel this impact. While the Fair Housing Act has not been changed, the department that enforces it no longer will, leaving tenants without an avenue for holding landlords accountable for discrimination and law violation.

CCAA predicts that more landlords with "no pet policies" will circle back to tenants with ESAs requiring pet deposits and additional fees. Some may revoke approved accommodations altogether, which may come with its own legal issues, especially depending on the state you live in.

Unfortunately, we did see this coming. Too many people used and abused this system, purchasing online therapist notes, letters, vests, etc. to be able to live places with their pets or avoid paying additional fees. Now, individuals with real need for an ESA will suffer. For this news to break on Memorial Day weekend, when so many veterans depend on their ESAs, with su***de rates for veterans back on the rise, and many of the HUD complaints consisting of vets with PTSD, this is a huge blow.

CCAA will continue to update the public as more news and updates become available.

**Volunteer Spotlight**

Caped Canines is blessed to have a team of talented, generous, and invested volunteers. Today, we'd like to highlight and congratulate our Fundraising Committee co-Chair, Mia!!

Mia is an invaluable member of our Committee and community. This month, her work as the Post-Race Events and Charities Intern at the Flying Pig came to a head with an extremely successful event. In addition, she graduated from the University of Cincinnati, proving it's never too late to follow your dreams. While we appreciate her leveraging these ties to benefit CCAA, what we love most about Mia is her creativity, dependability, drive, kindness, and heart. She shows up for CCAA and for the team as individuals. We are proud and honored to know her, love her, and steal her spare time.

Mia, thank you for all that you do and for being who you are.

Shrimp takes on... box feeding!

Box feeding is a specific method for increasing stress tolerance and resilience to loud noises. While Shrimp has shown no issues with sound sensitivity, this method will help him associate loud startling noises with rewards. Service dogs get exposed to such a wide variety of sounds that preparing for each one individually is nearly impossible. Box feeding gives us a framework to address any potential future issues should they arise. Check out tonight's session!

"Aside from our annual fundraisers, last year's Quarter Auction was, far and away, my favorite event of the year! Making sure a service dog has the right temperament for work is crucial. The ability to turn it on when it’s time to work and turn it off when it’s time to settle, all while remaining aware of their handler’s needs, is no easy task.

Phoenix joined Justine, Tori, and Charlie for a fun outing at Color Me Mine Crestview Hills. Throughout the day, Phoenix needed to stay aware of Justine, constantly using his nose and ears while also remaining calm, settled, and nearly invisible when not needed.

It’s always a balancing act for service dogs, and not every dog has what it takes to walk that fine line. We are so proud of Phoenix. He’s a star pupil and truly makes it look easy, even though we know how much work goes into it.
